Name "Stoten" is misspelled, but children are correct for John C. Stoughton and Mary Jane McCandless
2	1870 United States Federal Census, Franklin Township, Butler County, PA, Page 13, lines 1-8 lists John Stoughton, 34, married to Mary, 33. They live with seven children: son James Stoughton, 15; daughter Mary Stoughton, 14; daughter Ann Stoughton, 11; daughter Elizabeth Stoughton, 8; daughter Ellen Stoughton, 4; and daughter Jane Stoughton, 2. John Stoughton is listed as a farmer, Mary Stoughton as "keeping house," and James Stoughton as "farm laborer." Everyone is listed as having been born in PA. Mary Stoughton has a "father of foreign birth." James, Mary, Ann, and Elizabeth attended school within the year. Mary and Ann are listed as unable to write. This census page is undated. However, the previous page is dated July 21, 1870 and the following page is dated July 21,22 1870.
3	1880 United States Federal Census, Brady Township, Butler County, PA, Enumeration district 30, Page 2. Census is dated 8 Jun 1880. Lines 27-30: Effie J. Thompson, mother, 57, widow; Henry E. Miller, 36, farmer; Mary, 23, wife, keeping house; Minnie, 5, dau. All and all parents born PA. Note: This census has the correct age for Mary, correct husband & daughter's names, but it is not certain who Effie J. Thompson, labeled as "mother" is. She is 21 years older than Henry, widowed - from a second marriage? She is listed first, as if head of family, or owner of house.

Deaths: Miller - At her home in Brady Twp., Saturday, Jan. 17, 1891, Mrs. Mary Miller, widow of Henry Miller died, aged almost 35 years. She was sick but a few days of pneumonia. She was a daughter of John Stoughton. (Contributed by A. Fix., Oct. 2011).

• The transcription on FindAGrave.com for Minnie Miller says she died on 30 May 1883, aged 14 years 6 mos & 24 days. However, the 1880 census clearly lists her age in 1880 as 5 years. We believe the gravestone should be transcribed as died in 1888, which would put her birth date at about 6 Nov. 1874. When the 1880 census was taken in June, she had not yet had her 6th birthday. The Butler Co. Cemetery Inventory transcribes the death date as 30 May 1889, but in that case, she should have been age 6 at the time of the 1880 census. If the family were literate and the age in 1880 were correct, we believe her birth year to be 1874.
• From Ann Fix: The graves for Henry Miller & daughter Minnie are near those for John C. Stoughton and Mary Jane McCandless Stoughton. Mary O. Stoughton Miller was buried in the same row as Henry and daughter Minnie Miller, but at the very end of the row, near the lake.
  Note:Henry Miller died in 1887, followed closely by daughter Minnie, age 14, in 1888. Mary and Henry may have owned only a two grave plot. Or possibly Mary's parents provided space for Hery in their plot and later Mary wanted Minnie buried beside her father. In the photo from Burke Stoughton's FindAGrave site for John C. Stoughton (4 gravestones), the third stone is that of Henry Miller and the fourth is Minnie Miller. It is possible that John Stoughton purchased the four-grave plot.
