1	1800 United States Federal Census, Tyboyne Twp, Cumberland Co, PA, page 10. Family headed by Jno. Hougenberry: 3 males <10, 1 male >44, 4 females 10-15, 1 female >44. This family fits for the females but is a little unsure with respect to the male children. A Samuel Kelly lives next door. As an alternative: 1800 United States Federal Census, Slipperyrock Twp, Butler Co, PA page 10. The census is signed on 9 April 1801. Family headed by Jno. Haugenbery: 1 male 16-26, 1 male >44. This could be John Hockenberry and his son Casper (born 1785) but there are no females (Hannah Kelly is thought to have died in 1803, and there were several daughters in the family, including Jane Hockenberry). There is some question about the accuracy of the dates listed for this family.
2	1810 United States Federal Census, Slippery Rock Twp, Butler Co., PA page 10. Family headed by J. Houghenberry: 1 male <10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 male >44, 2 females <10, 1 female 16-25. The ages of the children are confused here, but it appears that an adult male, possibly a son or son-in-law is living with the widowed John Hockenberry and the younger children may include grandchildren. There is a C. Houghenberry (16-25)(possibly son Caspar)on the same page.
3	1820 United States Federal Census, Slippery Rock Twp, Butler Co., PA page 3. Family headed by John Hawkinberry: 1 male 16-25, 1 male >44, 1 female 16-25. Richard Hines and the Thomas Brandon families are on the same page.
4	1830 United States Federal Census, Slippery Rock Twp, Butler Co., PA page 19. Family headed by John Hawkinberry: 1 male 80-90, 1 female 40-50. John Hockenberry should be 89 in this census year.
5	1850 United States Federal Census, Franklin Twp., Butler Co. PA, page 25. Date of census 16 Aug 1850. Lines 34-37: Joseph Hockenberry age 64, Elizabeth 57, Margaret 16, (Noma?, male) age 13. Lines 38-42 Wm. Hockenberry age 33, Delilah 30, Gilbert 8, Joseph B. 6, Josephin (female) 2, (see pg 26 line 1) John M age 1. These families live next to Jane "Jennie" McCandless & children, and to a James M. McCandless. Joseph Hockenberry is an uncle of Jane "Jennie" McCandless. He is the brother of her mother Jane Hockenberry. William Hockenberry is age 33, married to Delilah. He may be a cousin of Jane "Jennie" McCandless, a son of her uncle Casper Hockenberry.
6	Pennsylvania Archives 5th Series, Vol. 6 pp. 408-409,, and American Revolutionary Soldiers of Franklin Co. PA by Virginia S. Fendrick. Peter and John Hockenberry, also Casper, James, Henry, & Henry Jr., served at various times in the Cumberland Co. Militia under Capt. Thomas Askey, from 1777-1782. Residences are ascribed in all cases to Fannett Twp., Cumberland Co. PA, in the Horse and Burns Valleys as indicated by old maps & wills. Fannett Twp., originally in Cumberland Co., is now in Farnklin Co. since 1784. These sources provided by A.H. Yehle in The Hockenberry-Hillsberry Family.
7	Manuscript: Peter Hockenberry and Descendants of his Son, John Hockenberry by Edith and Horace Renick, 1975, gives a detailed genealogical record of John Hockenberry and his father, Peter Hockenberry. John Hockenberry is listed as having been born around 1741, probably in Germany. He died around 1839, aged in his late 90's, and was probably buried near Coaltown, northwest of West Sunbury, Butler Co. PA. "Old tombstones are too smooth to read." He was married to Hannah Kelly. He came to American in about 1750, with his parents, and lived in Fannett Twp., Franklin Co., PA probably until his marriage. He fought several tours of duty during the Revolutionary War. At the time of his marriage he moved to Tobogne Twp. in Cumberland Co., PA (became Perry Co. in 1830), and probably operated his father's stave mill in Tobogne Twp. He was one of the signers of a petition, signed 18 May, 1778, requesting arms to defend themselves against Tories and Indians. He obtained 400 acres of land in Cumberland Co. on 3 Feb 1796.(PA Archives, 3rd Series, Vol. 25) In 1803, the John Hockenberry family (excluding his married son John, Jr.) moved to a spot a few miles south of Slippery Rock, Butler Co., PA. He moved again to Cherry Twp., Butler Co., just after 1830 and died there before 1840. His wife, Hannah, died soon after the 1803 move to Butler Co. Their children are listed as: John Hockenberry, Jr.; Casper Hockenberry, born 1785 and married to Margaret Shaffer; Joseph Hockenberry, born 1786 and married to Elizabeth unknown; Elizabeth Hockenberry, married James Buchanan; Jane Hockenberry, married Moses McCandless; Annie Hockenberry, married and died in Ohio; Ellen Hockenberry, married William Graham; and Jonathon Hockenberry, born 1795 and married Sarah Freeman. The Renicks note that Jonathon is listed as being older than his four sisters in the 1800 census, which conflicts with the order given above.	transcript
8	History of Butler County Pennsylvania 1895, p. 61, "Taxables of 1803 for Slippery Rock Twp.," John Hockenberry owned 150 acres of land, five cows, and one horse or ox, for a total value of $58 and paid tax on that property of $52. p. 612. Zion Baptist church organizedin Worth Twp., 1841; organizers included a "Brother Hockenberry". p. 616 ( re. Brady Twp.) John Hockenberry arrived in Brady Twp. in 1803, then removed to Cherry Twp. In 1810 Robert Hockenberry settled near West Liberty, then moved to site of Coaltown. p. 1246 John Hockenberry, a native of Perry County, PA, arrived Butler Co. about 1803; settled in Brady Twp.; after several years moved to Cherry Twp. where he died. He married Hannah Kelly; eight children: John; Casper; Jonathan; Elizabeth, married James Buchanan; Jane, married Moses McCandless; Annie, married & died in Ohio; Ellen, married William Graham; Joseph; "all of whom are dead".	transcript

He died in the neighborhood where he first settled, in the ninety-ninth year of his age. Names of his children: John, Caspar, Joseph, Jonathan, Betsey (Buchanan), Jane (McCandless), Anna (Woolum), and Ellen Graham. Caspar married Margaret Shaffer. He died in Worth Township. Six of his children are living in this county." p.360, re. Worth Township: " Joseph P. Hockenberry was born in this township in 1852, and when about twenty years of age, or in 1872, his father presented him with the fine farm he now owns and cultivates. His father, Joseph, was quite an early settler."
