The younger Johannes Friedrich, who was born in 1784, grew up in Hitzerode. His maternal Becker grandparents from Hitzerode had died twenty years earlier, and his paternal grandparents may or may not have been living, but if so, were some miles away. As a boy he may have occasionally accompanied his father on his "fuhrmann's", or wagoner's route, but his father died when he was nine years old. Presumably there were older brothers to help support the family, but young Johannes may have taken up the wagoner's trade at quite an early age.
Four months after his twentieth birthday, Johannes married Anna Margarethe Speck, also from Hitzerode and the daughter of Jakob Speck and Anna Catharina Becker. Anna Margarethe was nineteen when they married. They lived out their lives in Hitzerode. Both died before 1852, but it unknown if their son went to America before that date. They may or may not have known that he married Anna Kuhnemuth and emigrated from Germany.
