[edit] NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Elizabeth Levy is not in my direct ancestry. She was the wife of Samuel Beals who is 1 step removed in the following ways:

In January of 1881, seven months after Samuel Beals' first wife, age fifty, hung herself, Samuel married Lizzy Levy. She was about 25, and became the step-mother of Samuel's seven living children by first wife Catherine Marsh. In September of 1881 Lizzy had the first child of seven born to this second marriage(four daughters and three sons). The fifth child, daughter Essa, died within 15 days of birth.
Samuel's obituary mentions a step-son, Warren Baker, living in Bryant Indiana. He does not appear in any census with the family of Samuel Beals, and neither of Samuel's wives had an earlier marriage.

[edit] Source Notes

  • In the 1900 census Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Beals, reports having 6 children, 6 currently living. The Salem Lutheran Cemetery association lists a 7th, Essie, apparently (by order listed) born between 1886 and 1890; infant death. Correspondant/Contributor Duane Beals confirms a daughter Essa, born May or June, 1889.
  • Obituary of Samuel Beals in Seneca Kicker: reports erroneously that Samuel Beals was buried at Emanuel Cemetery. Samuel had given land for this cemetery and his first wife Catherine Marsh is buried there, but he was buried with a large gravestone at Knox Cemetery with his 2nd wife Lizzy Leavey.

[edit] Research Notes

  • [3] Salem Lutheran Cemetery Association Records, lists 6 children of Samuel Beals and Catharine Marsh, all of the above except Mahlon Oliver Beals, who died young. It lists 6 children of Samuel Beals and Lizzy Leavy, all of the above except Essie Beals, who died young.
