* Daniel Wimer, discussed by Norman C. Miller Jr., does not appear in the various census as living with the Jonathan Wimer family. <br>  However, living two houses away from Jonathan's family in 1850 is a  Mary Wimer, age 65, apparently a widow, with children Thomas 30, Adam 25, Margaret 20, Mary 15, and Daniel 14.  It is possible that all the children are hers (she would be 51 when Daniel was born), but also possible that some of the younger children (Margaret, Mary, Daniel) are staying with her, children of Jonathan and Ann Wimer.  There isn't a Mary in the list of Jon & Ann's children, but their daughter Sophia was obviously named for her grandmother, Mary Sophia Snyder, and could have had the name Mary .  Margaret was born in 1831, Sophia in 1833, and Daniel 1836 or earlier.  The children living with Mary Wimer in 1850 are a decent match, age-wise.  It is possible Jonathan sent his 3 oldest children to help out with Mary Wimer's farm after her husband died. (Note: Margaret and Sophia are present in Jonathan's house in the 1850 census, but Daniel is not.) The question is, who is Mary Wimer?  Probably the wife of a cousin of Jonathan Wimer's, or even an aunt, the wife of a brother of Christopher Wimer.  Two houses on past Mary Wimer lived John Wimer, brother of Jonathan Wimer.  So, whoever Mary Wimer is, she seems intimately related to John and Jon Wimer, and it is easily possible that the 14 year old Daniel at her house could be the missing son of Jonathan.

6 Will of Jonathan Wimeras transcribed by Paul W. Myers in The Wimer Family, p. 35. Lists "wife"; sons Jefferson & Peter; daughter-in-law Margaret, widow of my son Jonathan H."; daughters Margaret Jane, Sophia,Rebecca, Catharine Ann; three grandchildren (unnamed), children of daughter Hannah. Signed 8 June 1880.(Willbook source not listed; presume Butler County PA).

From correspondence of Norman C. Miller, Jr., 1988: "Jonathan's will does not name Daniel...he did identify a dau.-in-law Margaret Jane (widow of Jonathan H.) and a daughter-in-law Margaret worded to indicate a different one. This could only be Daniel's wife (or ex-wife). I know his parents held Daniel responsible for William's death[Civil War] - which could have been reason enough to have disinherited him."
Note: We have not seen a copy of the original script form of the will. Either Norman C. Miller or Paul J. Myers has miss-read it with regard to the two Margarets, daughter & daughter-in-law, as to which was Margaret Jane. We see no wording indicating a 2nd daughter-in-law in the transcription of Paul J. Myers.

7 Correspondence of Norman C. Miller, Jr. with Elizabeth Wilson Williams, 1988. (See Contributors page.)
"Jonathan Wimer's first born son was Daniel, born circa 1836 (or 1832...or 1838) and middle initial was N (or M or W.) I know Myers (ie. Paul W. Myers in "The Wimer Family") does not list him as a son, but he was. My grandmother Miller said her Uncle Daniel was the black sheep of the family...she said he was one of her favorite uncles and she gave me a small pocket photo album that Daniel carried during the Civil War. Inside the fly leaf Daniel wrote his name as Daniel N. along with his unit - Battery B, 1st Pa. Artillery. Daniel enlisted in Bat'ry B. in Aug of 1864 serving until discharged in June '65."
Miller gives further military records of Daniel N Wimer, Daniel M Wimer/Wymer, (indicating birth years 1836, or 1838)and brother William Wimer; and a grave for Daniel W. Weimer (calculated birth year 1832)with marker for Co. G. 134th PA Vols. at Zion Baptist Cemetery in Worth Co., where Daniel's father Jonathan Wimer is also buried.
Note: Regarding the middle initial, see source #8, death notices.

[edit] Source notes

  • Earlier census are available, but shed no particular light on the family.
  • This branch of the Wimer family connects to the Wilson family, 4 generations later. Peter Wimer (31 May 1841-30 Dec 1919) married (29 Sept 1859) to Eleanor Fisher (19 Jan 1843 - 24 May 1918); their son Ford Wimer (4 Dec 1885 - 7 Aug 1971) married A. Gertrude Leise (9 Nov 1892 - 4 June 1966); their son Charles W. Wimer (b. 18 May 1910) married Bernice Evelyn Wilson, daughter of James Garfield Wilson and Lorena Bernice Mayer.
from p. 34 & 47 of The Wimer Family by Paul W. Myers.
  • This branch of the Wimer family also connects to the Stoughton family. Peter Wimer & Eleanor Fisher; their son William Wimer (b. 29 May 1863,d. 23 June 1940) married Sidney Jane "Jennie" Stoughton, a daughter of John C. Stoughton. William & Sidney Jane had 3 children: Lowry A. Wimer (b. 12 June 1885), Lester Wimer, and Harrison Wimer. Sidney Jane Stoughton (Wimer) married 2nd to Thomas James Conroy. See. pg. 38, "The Wimer Family" by Paul W. Myers.

[edit] Conjecture

  • Daniel Wimer, discussed by Norman C. Miller Jr., does not appear in the various census as living with the Jonathan Wimer family.
However, living two houses away from Jonathan's family in 1850 is a Mary Wimer, age 65, apparently a widow, with children Thomas 30, Adam 25, Margaret 20, Mary 15, and Daniel 14.
