Sarah Hoge/Hogg was born in May, 1753 in Philadelphia, to Robert & Letitia Hoge/Hogg, shortly after they had immigrated from County Down, Ireland in 1752. Her father was born in Scotland, and it is possibly that her mother, born in Northern Ireland, was also of Scottish descent. A brother born in Ireland in 1751 is reported to have died at age 2 (in 1753) in Philadelphia. The family located in the Tuscarora Valley of Cumberland Co. PA (now Juniata Co.) in the spring of 1754. Sarah thus grew up as the oldest of the suviving children, with three younger sisters, and one brother. Another brother born in 1764 died in infancy.
In June of 1756 Indian incursions along the Juniata forced the Hoge family to flee to Carlisle, where they stayed until fall of that year. Twice more they took refuge in Carlisle. Sarah would have been three years old when these incidents began.
Sarah married first to George McCullough, a veteran of the American Revolution. George had immigranted in 1774 with his two cousins, Thomas & John McKee. The 3 young men settled in Tuscarora Valley, PA and each married a daughter of Robert Hoge. George McCullough and Sarah Hoge are known to have had two daughters, Letitia and Anna McCullough, named in the will of their grandfather Robert Hoge. George died in 1783 per source at age 32 yrs, from the bite of a rabid dog.
Sarah remarried in (1781 per source; expect 1787) to Hamilton Graham, and had at least three children - Robert, George and Jane Graham, who are also named in the will.
When Sarah was 48 years old, and twice married, her father, Robert Hoge, died on his farm in Juniata Co. 25 Jan. 1798, aged 80 years. Letitia survived him until 8 Mar. 1812, when Sarah Graham would have been age 62 years. Her parents are buried in the McKee graveyard. Sarah died in 1828, at age 75, near Waterford in Juniata Co. PA.

1 | 1790 United States Federal Census, Chester Co. PA, Oxford Twp, pg. 3 on Ancestry.com. Census not dated. George McCullough head of a household that includes 3 males under age 16, 1 male over age 16, and 3 females. The George McCullough entry (31300) could be the spouse of Sarah Hoge but the 3 boys in the census are not known to be Sarah's; the 2 daughters are documented elsewhere. This appears to be the closest match, from 5 George McCulloughs listed in PA in 1790. Listed in the same township are the households of a Robert McKee (12200); Robert Hogg (14200); William Robinson (10100); John Robinson (14200). These surnames are those of the spouses of the children of Robert Hoge, though not these individuals. The cluster of names suggests that this could be the community of residence of Robert Hoge's family. (1790 census numbers indicate males under 16, males over 16, females, other free persons, & slaves.) |

W1 | Martin/Bailey Family, owner Kerry Bailey, on Ancestry.com This site sets the marriage of Robert Hoge and Letitia, and the birth of their first son, in Ireland. It sets the birthplace of Sarah Hoge in Philadelphia, Chester Co. PA. No sources are given. Sarah Hoge, daughter of Robert & Letitia, born May 1753 in Philadelphia; died 2 June 1826 in Near Waterford, Juniata PA. She is listed as marrying in 1771(at age 18) to Graham Hamilton (rather than marrying 2nd to Hamilton Graham), in Philadelphia, Chester Co. PA. (This location is problematic, as her parents moved to Tuscarora Valley in 1754). She is listed as marrying 2nd in 1778 (at age 25) to George McCullough in Tuscarora Valley, Juniata PA. Her children with Graham Hamilton (or Hamilton Graham), are the George, Jane, and Robert Graham listed in the will of Robert Hoge. Here they are listed with both the Hamilton and the Graham last names, to cover both possibilities. George was born 8 Feb 1788 in Tuscarora Valley, & died Apr 1849, Spruce hill, Juniata Co. PA. Jane Hamilton was born 4 Dec 1788 (same year as George?), Tuscarora Valley; however Jane Graham was born 4 Dec 1790, no location given, and died 19 Feb 1873, no location. Robert Graham was born 1792 in PA, died 1859, no locaion. Robert Hamilton was born 1792 in Tuscarora Valley, Juniata Co. PA. Without sources, it is hard to judge how these variants arise, and renders the data for the Graham children unreliable. See at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/5698584/person/-1002182525 |
