Need name for Mary Morris' father to get 1800, 1810 census data.

Correspondence with Thomas G. Adams is indirect, provided by Murphy Whisnant. Mr. Adams notes that George Pope married three daughters of Nicholas Thomas.

R1 1810 United States Federal Census

Marry Morris and Nicholas Thomas were married in Randolph Co, NC in 1812. This is adjacent to Davidson Co, where Nicholas Thomas resides in our first clear records. A search of Randolph Co for Morris families in the 1810 census gave the following seven heads-of-household:

  • Benjamin Morris (1 male 26-44, 2 females <10, 3 females 26-44, 1 female >44)
  • Isaac Morris (1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-44, 2 female <10, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44)
  • John Morris (1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 16-25)
  • Joseph Morris (1 male 10-15, 1 male >44, 5 females <10, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 26-44)
  • Mary Morris (1 male 16-25, 1 female <10, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44, 1 female >44)
  • Reuben Morris (1 male <10, 1 male 16-25, 1 female 16-25)
  • Thomas Morris (1 male 26-44, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-44)
The listings are semi-alphabetical, so it is not possible to draw any conclusions about connections.

The Mary Morris married to Nicholas Thomas was born ~ 1790, so she would be in 16-25 age group in this census. That rules out the families headed by Benjamin, Joseph, and Thomas. The family headed by Reuben would appear to be a husband and wife plus a young son. That leaves three possible families. The family headed by Mary Morris is a tempting possibility (although almost certainly the head listed here is the matriarch of the family, the woman over 44. It is also possible that Nicholas and Mary were married in Randolph but that neither actually lived there in 1810. The 1810 listing in Ancestry.com does not have any Morris families living in Davidson Co.

R2 1800 United States Federal Census The only Morris listed in Randolph Co is
  • Mary Morris (1 male 10-15, 1 female <10, 1 female 16-25, 1 female >44). This would still fit for the Mary Morris married to Nicholas Thomas, if the female <10 is just under 10 on the census date.
1800 census nc randolph hillsboro pg 29.jpg
R3 The 1880 census is almost certainly not the right Mary Thomas. William D. Thomas can be found in Thomasville in the 1860 census living with his parents, including mother Mary.
