NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

MaryHoge/Hogg is not in my direct ancestry. She is 1 step removed in the following ways:

MaryHoge/Hogg was born 2 Jan 1762 in Tuscarora Valley to Robert & Letitia Hoge/Hogg, ten years after they had immigrated from County Down, Ireland in 1752. Her father was born in Scotland, and it is possibly that her mother, born in Northern Ireland, was also of Scottish descent. The family located in the Tuscarora Valley of Cumberland Co. PA (now Juniata Co.) in the spring of 1754. Martha was born there, and grew up with three older sisters and a younger brother. An older brother born in Ireland had died before she was born, and a second brother died in infancy. Mary married John McKee, a 1774 immigrant from Ireland, and a cousin to Thomas McKee and George McCullough who married her sisters Martha and Sarah. These three men also settled in the Tuscarora Valley community, and all three fought in the American Revolution. <br<Mary and John had nine children, the last born in 1801 when Mary was age 39. She appears to have been a sole witness in a famous land case, the "Gray" case, but the location is not named. It is likely that her children were all born in Tuscarora Valley area, as two of the later children remained there to their deaths, but several of Mary's children migrated to Allegheny, Butler, or Clarion Co. in western PA; her youngest and oldest children went to Wooster, Ohio. Mary apparently outlived her husband, and spent her last years with her daughter Mary, who married a Thomas McKee of Butler Co. PA. We assume that Thomas McKee was a cousin of some degree, and that the couple, and later Mary Hoge McKee, resided in Butler Co.

Source Notes

  • Per the manuscript of Dr. Egle, James McKee (b. 1779, son of Martha Hoge & Thomas McKee) married Mary "Polly" unknown. Mary McKee (b.1787, dau. of Mary Hoge & John McKee) married "her cousin" James McKee. It is possible that Mary & her first cousin James, children of Martha Hoge & Mary Hoge, married each other, but not certain. There were other related Hoge families in the area.
