Research Notes
R1 | 1910 United States Federal Census for Manhattan Ward 12, New York City, New York, district 0295, sheet 23B. Lines 79-86: Household of Antonio Sciolo, 31, and his wife Maria, 37. They've been married for 13 years (first marriage for each) and have had four children together, all of whom are living and all of whom are present in this household. Daughter Lizzie, 12, son Dominik, 9, daughter Ida, 5, and daughter Margaret, 2. Also present are a lodger named Nicolino Vincivera, 21, and a "brother in law" named Costartius Cachioni, 18. Dominik, Ida, and Maragaret were born in NY, everyone else and everyone's parents were born in northern Italy. Antonio immigrated in 1898, Maria and Lizzie followed in 1899. Maria cannot speak English. Antonio works as a tailor in a factory. The margin notes indicate that they live on E(?) 119th St. The census is dated 27 Apr 1910. |

This source seems very appealing because the age for our Margaret Anna Sciallo is a dead match, as is the first name for her mother, Maria Pellegrino. The name "Sciolo" is a plausible misunderstanding for "Sciallo." There are, however, some issues with this source:
- It is not clear who the "brother in law" is or who he is married to.
- The first name of the father, Antonio, is not too similar to the name we have from family verbal history, which is "Alesandro."
- The implied birth year for Maria Pellegrino would be 1873, whereas our records list her as being born in 1889. However, this year comes only from a poorly-matched census as well (from the same year, 1910!). At most one of these two census entries is a match for our Maria Pellegrino, possibly neither.
Aside from this, the match for our Margaret Anna Sciallo and parents seems feasible given the (limited) information we have at this time.
R2 | 1920 United States Federal Census for Manhattan Assembly District 20, New York City, NY, d1360, page 28. Lines 65-69: Anthony Sciolo, 43, and wife Mary Scioli, 45. He immigrated in 1899, she in 1900. Son Dominick, 18, daughter Ida, 14, and daughter Margaret, 8. The kids were born in NY, the parents and their parents in Italy. Anthony is a tailor. The home is on 119th st. |

Here we have the same family, 10 years later. Lizzie has apparently left home, but otherwise the match between the two is very clear. There are some discrepancies, though:
- Antonio has anglicized his name to Anthony and Maria to Mary.
- The ages are a mess. Anthony has aged 12 years in the last decade, Maria only 8. Margaret has only aged 6 years. Dominick and Ida's ages are believable.
- The immigration years for both Anthony and Mary have moved up a yaer.
Despite these oddities, I believe that this census reflects the same family as the 1910 census, above. The spelling of the name, "Sciolo," unfortunately persists and is still not "Sciallo."
