|''' Butler Sentinel notice''', issues of 24 Nov 1827 and 5 Jan 1828. Copy supplied to us by Marc Flitsch.
Robert Logan issued a notice to creditors, that he would not pay bills for his wife "Massey" who had left him "on the 19th instant". (i.e. 19 Nov 1827). The length of separation extended at least through January. Marc notes that whether Massey and Euphamia are the same person is unclear. Euphemia is mentioned on property records in Slippery Rock Twp. and "Massey" is mentioned in estate papers in 1840.

===Source notes===
* The 1840 census for the Robert Logan family indicates 7 young females between 0 & 20 yrs old. If all are daughters, this would indicate at least 8 children for the family, as Adaline was born in 1844.
In the 1830 census,of the 3 young females listed only Eliza Jane (born 1825-26) is certain. She may be in either the age 0-5 or 5-10 group. This census would not include Hannah b. 1837, or Adaline b. 1844. It may include Eleana, as all we know is that she was born sometime before her uncle Jacob's will of 1841. She is curiously the only one of the sisters mentioned in the will.

* Assuming Robert Logan is approximately the same age as Euphamia, he would have been around 50 at the start of the Civil War. This seems old for a soldier. There is another Robert Logan (age 19) in the 1860 census for Slippery Rock Twp. and despite the reference in Source #6 (John W. Jourdan's history), this younger Robert Logan may be the Civil War veteran.

* Assuming Robert Logan is approximately the same age as Euphamia, he would have been around 50 at the start of the Civil War. This seems old for a soldier, and there is a younger Robert Logan (age 19 in the 1860 census for Slippery Rock Twp). Never-the-less, Stoughton family source for John W. Jourdan's history was likely a nephew of Robert Logan. Per Jim Voltz: "My guess, though a pretty good one, is that the information in ''Genealogical and personal history of Western Pennsylvania'', Vol. 3 came from my great-grandfather Dr. James Boyle. Robert Logan would have been his uncle. Granted James was the youngest in the family and never knew his uncle, but he was born near the war's end, when it was still fresh on everyone's mind. His parents and his numerous siblings would have lived through it and known."
We therefore credit John W. Jourdan's account that Robert Logan, husband of Euphamia Stoughton, was a Civil War soldier and died in that war.

* 1850 and 1860 census searches for Butler County give a Robert Logan b. ca. 1800 living with other people, but no evidence of Euphamia.

* 1850 and 1860 census searches for Butler County give a Robert Logan b. ca. 1800 living with other people, but no evidence of Euphamia.
* It is uncertain whether Euphamia or husband Robert Logan died first. Source W1, the Flitch-McGowan-Hockaday-Brown family tree, lists a death date of 1841 for Euphamia Stoughton (Logan), which conflicts with the 1844 birth date of her daughter Adaline, documented in both the 1870 (Abby) and 1880 (Adeline) census. The proposed 1841 death date for Euphamia Stoughton (Logan) needs documentation. Source W1 also says Robert Logan died 2 June 1840, but he appears to be living in 1850 with relatives of his wife.

5 Will of Jacob Stoughton, abstract, from Book B, p.195. Jacob Stoughton of Muddy Creek Twp., Butler Co. PA; will signed 2 Apr. 1841, filed 25 June 1841. The will lists "niece Eleana Logan".
It is uncertain whether this will belongs to Jacob, brother of Euphamia Stoughton; if so, then Euphamia had a daughter named Eleana. To be otherwise would require a different Jacob Stoughton to also have a sister married to a Logan.

Source notes

  • The 1840 census for the Robert Logan family indicates 7 young females between 0 & 20 yrs old. If all are daughters, this would indicate at least 8 children for the family, as Adaline was born in 1844.
Eleana was born sometime before her uncle Jacob's will of 1841. She is curiously the only one of the sisters mentioned in the will.
  • Assuming Robert Logan is approximately the same age as Euphamia, he would have been around 50 at the start of the Civil War. This seems old for a soldier, and there is a younger Robert Logan (age 19 in the 1860 census for Slippery Rock Twp). Never-the-less, Stoughton family source for John W. Jourdan's history was likely a nephew of Robert Logan. Per Jim Voltz: "My guess, though a pretty good one, is that the information in Genealogical and personal history of Western Pennsylvania, Vol.
  • 1850 and 1860 census searches for Butler County give a Robert Logan b. ca. 1800 living with other people, but no evidence of Euphamia.
  • It is uncertain whether Euphamia or husband Robert Logan died first. It may arise from their assumption that "Massey" and Euphamia are the same person. It may be "Massey" who died in 1841. Source W1 also says Robert Logan died 2 June 1840, but he appears to be living in 1850 with relatives of his wife.

DISCLAIMER: USE OF UNDOCUMENTED WEB SOURCES

Some of the information on this page was found on websites presented by researchers who have either not listed their sources or employ the circular logic of citing additional undocumented websites.
These web site sources are listed separately below. The attribution number for these web sources is preceded by a "W".
We frequently find conflicting information on the web family trees. We offer the un-sourced information on this page as a starting point for further research only, and discourage its inclusion on additional posted websites or in other reproduced material without either further documentation or a disclaimer.

The following website family trees give a Robert Logan family with wife named "Massey"in some sources, "Euphamia" in others. Daughters of this spouse are named Eliza Jane Logan (m. Wm. McGowan), Clarissa Logan (m. Archey McGowan), Martha Logan, Hannah Logan, and Adaline Logan (m. Thomas J. Ross). Daughter of 2nd spouse (name of spouse unknown) is again listed as Clarissa Logan (again marrying Archey McGowan).
We believe that Robert Logan who married "Massey", and who died in 1840, is not the same Robert Logan who married Euphamia Stoughton.

W1 Flitch-McGowan-Hockaday-Brown family tree, on Ancestry.com, owner "mflitch7", no email address. Site lists descendants of Euphema Massey Stoughton and Robert Logan, Jr. (children Adaline, Clarissa,Martha, Eliza Jane (1825-1888),& Hannah Logan (1837-????)). Site lists parents of Euphema Stoughton as Catherine Covert and (erroneously, we believe) John Walker Stoughton. See John Stoughton for discussion. The site also gives for Euphema a marriage date of before 1825, a notation of "separation from Robert Logan, Jr" dated 21 Nov 1827, and a death date for Euphema of 1841.
For Robert Logan Jr. it gives birthdate 1795 in Butler, PA, and death date 2 Jun 1840 in Cranberry, Butler Co. PA.
Sources listed for Euphema Massey Stoughton are the 1810 & 1820 census for J. Stoughton family, & the 1830 & 1840 census for Robert Logan family. None of these census list wife or children's names, marriage or death dates, so sources for this information not specified.

F1 Butler Sentinel notice, issues of 24 Nov 1827 and 5 Jan 1828. Copy supplied to us by Marc Flitsch.
Robert Logan issued a notice to creditors, that he would not pay bills for his wife "Massey" who had left him "on the 19th instant". (i.e. 19 Nov 1827). The length of separation extended at least through January.
Marc Flitsch notes that whether Massey and Euphamia are the same person is unclear. "Euphemia" is mentioned on property records in Slippery Rock Twp. and "Massey" is mentioned in estate papers in 1840.
