* Source 1, 1830 U.S.Federal Census, Slippery Rock Twp., Mercer Co. PA: the family of a George How age 30-40, 1F age 30-40; 4 children: 1M & 1F aged under 5; 2M aged 5-10This George How is of the same generation, possibly a brother of Abram Howe. Abram had a son named George who eventually resided in Mercer Co. PAIn 1930 Abram Howe was aged about 33 yrs; this George How was aged 30-40 yrs, with 4 children under 10 years. Slippery Rock Twp. of 1830 Mercer Co. and Shenango Twp. of 1830 Beaver Co. today share a common township line in Lawrence County, created in 1850 from the border area of Beaver and Mercer counties. The two Howe's could have lived not far apart. A search of property maps or records is needed.

*1840 census PA, Cumberland Co. Dickinson Twp: Abram How age 40-50; 1F age 30-40; 1F&1M age 10-15; 2M age <5. The male age 40-50 is correct for what we know of our Abram Howe, and the female child age 10-15 is correct for dau. CatherineThe other ages do not match what we know of Barbara, George & Samuel. Does not appear to be the correct family.
* 1850 census PA, Cumberland Co., Dickinson Twp.:  Abram Howe age 48, Elizabeth age 39, and 5 children including a Catherine E. age 3.  This is not the same person as Abram Howe above, nor could he be his father; no apparent relationship.

* 1850 census, Clarion Co., Porter Twp. for Abram How: note the use of "Abram" & "Barbara" in names of grandchildren (children of Anna Catherine Howe & Henry Kline); and the agreement of Anna Catherine's calculated birth year from her 1850 census age of  20 yrs, with her death date (1890) & age (60 yrs).
+
* Per Robert Beals, of Emlenton, PA & great-grandson of Catherine Howe(interviewed in 1995 by EWW ), Catherine had a brother named George Howe who owned a coffee company. Catherine's husband, Henry Kline, had a brother who worked there for George for a time. (The 1995 phone book listed a George J. Howe Coffee Co., 629 W. Main St., Grove City, Mercer Co. PA.  Whether the intial, "J" , was original or added with a later owner is unknown.
+
*  The History of Clarion Co., 1887, p. xxv, biography of George Howe b. 1823, lists his parents as Abraham & Barbara Howe.  Daughter Catherine Howe & husband Henry Kline named one of their sons John Abram Kline, and one of their daughters Barbara; this name repetition supports the belief that the Abraham Howe in this biography is the father of Catherine Howe. If so, the family originated, or was in Huntington County PA for a time.

(In 1995, the phone book listed a George J. Howe Coffee Co., 629 W. Main St., Grove City, Mercer Co. Her gravestone lists her age as 60 yrs., when she died in 1890. This would make her 20 yrs. old in 1850.

* George G. Howe, relationship unknown.  There is a second Howe biography, p. xxv, 1887 History of Clarion Co., of one Nelson B. Howe of Knox b. 1849. It lists his father as George C. and Barbara E. (Armstrong) Howe - so possibly a son of the George Howe above, except that it also lists his paternal grandfather as Simeon Howe, pioneer of Clarion Co. PA.  It is enticing to wonder if the writer mangled the second biography, skipping a generation, assigning Barbara Armstrong to the wrong generation of Howe, etc.  (See complete text) This Nelson Howe appears as an 11 year old child in the 1860 census, parents Barbara E. and George G. Howe.  Nelson's brother, John F. * There are also a number of How and Howe families in Butler County
*The 1887 History of Clarion Co. indicates that Catherine Howe was born in Huntington Co., PA.  The 1820 census for Pennsylvania lists three How(e) families in Huntington Co, headed by Martha Howe, Jacob How, and John How.  Only the John How household has a male in the 18-26 range, but the 18-26 yr old is apparently John, the head of household, and thus could not be the father of our Abram Howe.

Thw 1820 census for Pennsylvania lists three How(e) families in Huntington Co, headed by Martha Howe, Jacob How, and John How.  Only John How has a male in the 18-26 range, but there is no older male in the family.  This does not appear to be out line.  However, the Clarion Co. history indicates that Catherine Howe was born in Huntington Co.  There is also a William Howe in Sugar Creek Twp, Venango Co, PA who has a son in 10-15 range.  This is a little young for Abram Howe, but probably within the error margin for the census.  We obviosly need some additional data.  EBW

Source Notes

 • 1840 census PA, Cumberland Co. Dickinson Twp: Abram How age 40-50; 1F age 30-40; 1F&1M age 10-15; 2M age <5. The male age 40-50 is correct for what we know of our Abram Howe, and the female child age 10-15 is correct for dau. Catherine. The other ages do not match what we know of Barbara, George & Samuel. Does not appear to be the correct family.

1850 census PA, Cumberland Co., Dickinson Twp.: Abram Howe age 48, Elizabeth age 39, and 5 children including a Catherine E. age 3. This is not the same person as Abram Howe above, nor could he be his father; no apparent relationship.

 • Per Robert Beals,1995 (Emlenton, PA, great-grandson of Catherine Howe), Catherine had a brother named George Howe who owned a coffee company and Catherine's husband, Henry Kline, had a brother who worked there for George for a time. (In 1995, the phone book listed a George J. Howe Coffee Co., 629 W. Main St., Grove City, Mercer Co. PA. Whether the compamy name has changed to reflect current owner's name is unknown). The History of Clarion Co., 1887, p. xxv biography of George Howe b. 1823, lists his parents as Abraham & Barbara Howe. Henry Kline & Catherine Howe named one of their sons John Abram Kline, and one of their daughters Barbara; this name repetition supports the belief that the Abraham Howe in this biography is the father of Catherine Howe. If so, the family originated, or was in Huntington County PA for a time. The 1850 census of Porter Twp.,Clarion Co., household of Abram & Barbara How, daughter Catherine's age as 20. Her gravestone lists her age as 60 yrs., when she died in 1890. This would make her 20 yrs. old in 1850.

Conjecture

 • George G. Howe, is buried in the Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Clarion Co. PA.

*Venango County Records , Vol. I,1984, Venango Co. Genealogical Club, Oil City. pg. 18. Miller Farm Cemetery, Oil Creek Twp., Venango Co. "the Miller Farm Cemetery is located within the present Oil Creek State Park & includes a number of pre-oil burials...the cemetery has been badly vandalized & many stones listed below destroyed. This copy made in 1958: ...
Emily, dau. of Samuel & Sarah Howe, died July 5, 1843, (age illegible).
Rachel, dau. of Samuel & Sarah Howe, died June 10, 1848, aged 9 yr. 4 mo., 7 da.
(Note: Samuel & Sarah Howe are also buried here in unmarked graves. Samuel Howe was murdered on his farm near Pioneer in 1879.)"
Also: Venango County Genealogy Club , Fall 1989, p.5: " Aug. 12, 1878 - Mrs. Sarah Sproul Howe, wife of Samuel Howe, died on Friday night last (Aug. 9). The family are among the oldest residents of the county. Interred at Miller Farm."
Any relationship of this Samuel Howe to our Howe family above is unknown; the presence of a Samuel Howe in each was noted.

 • There are also a number of How and Howe families in Butler County

Thw 1820 census for Pennsylvania lists three How(e) families in Huntington Co, headed by Martha Howe, Jacob How, and John How. Only John How has a male in the 18-26 range, but there is no older male in the family. This does not appear to be out line. However, the Clarion Co. history indicates that Catherine Howe was born in Huntington Co. There is also a William Howe in Sugar Creek Twp, Venango Co, PA who has a son in 10-15 range. This is a little young for Abram Howe, but probably within the error margin for the census. We obviosly need some additional data. EBW
