Conjecture
In 1860, son Marion lives with his parents in Illinois. By 1870, Marion is living with his mother Caroline Murphy and his brother Willie Murphy in the house of Caroline's parents, Erastus and Lucy Church. There is a Civil War record available on ancestry.com showing a "Jofferson S. Murphy" having served in the war and "Caroline R." as his widow. I believe that Jefferson was killed in the Civil War, and that afterwards Carolyn took the kids and moved in with her parents in Indiana.
