Johannes Waldron
Native of England
Resident of Holland
Johannes Waldron's name in England, before the family migrated to the Netherlands, was likely John Waldron. At present we do not know the year when the family left England, but it is believed that John belonged to a landed family, the Waldrons of Walderne Woods near the east coast of England.
During the tumultuous years after the Reformation and the subsequent absolutist reigns preceding the English Civil War, Protestants in many countries sought sanctuary from persecution in the Netherlands or in Mannheim Germany, both known for tolerance. These upheavals may or may not have influenced the Waldrons' leaving England. If the birth date and place for John/Johannes Waldron are correct, the family was still in England in 1579, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. They appear to have left sometime before 1610, the year in which Johannes married Maria Covert in Harlem, Netherlands. Possibly, they had political difficulties with the absolutist rule of James I, and his son Charles I. By the time of the Restoration, the Waldrons had made new lives in Holland, with Dutch wives and children who spoke the Dutch language. In our direct line, no generation of the Waldron family lived their entire life in Holland. John/Johannes Waldron left England before marriage, and died in Holland. His son Resolved Waldron was born in Holland, and immigrated to New Amsterdam in America. Perhaps the number of refugees from elsewhere in Europe put too much pressure on the available land, and Resolved and his children left for the Dutch colony in America hoping for property and a new start.
English history in the time of the Waldrons
- The religious Reformation movement began in 1517.
- Henry VIII ruled England from 1509-1547, instituting the Protestant Church of England.
- The child Edward VI and his two Protectors ruled from 1547-1553; the country remained Protestant.
- Queen Mary ruled from 1553-1558. She was, like her mother, Catherine of Aragon, a fervent Catholic, and under her direction many Protestants were convicted of heresy and burned at the stake.
- Elizabeth I, a Protestant, ruled from 1558-1603. The Spanish Armada was defeated in 1558.
- James I (reigned 1603-1625) and his son Charles I (reigned 1625-1649) both ruled by "Divine Right of Kings", ignoring Parliament and exerting absolute authority.
- Oliver Cromwell, military and political leader, defeated the royalists in the English Civil War, and became "Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland" in Dec. 1653; he ruled with a repressive style of Puritanism.
- "The Restoration": Cromwell was overthrown, and Charles II ruled (1660-1685) with a reactionary laxity focused on the sensuous life devoted to his own pleasure.
