David Klein

NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR David Kline is not in my direct ancestry. He is a member of the Philip Wendel Klein family: Grandson of Peter Klein Son of John Jacob Klein Philip Wendel Klein immigrated to America in 1744 on the same ship "Phoenix" with our ancestor Johannes Klein, and both settled in what became Lehigh Co. PA. Their relationship, if any, remains unproven.

It is inconclusive whether the David Klein, son of John Jacob Klein is indeed the husband of Mary (who married 2nd) John Stauffer), and the father of her three children,Aaron, David and Rebecca. Please see the Source Notes section.

4	Genealogical and Personal History of the Allegheny Valley, Pennsylvania by John Jordan, Lewis Historical Publishing Co. 1913. 3 Vols. pg. 634 KLINE The first member of this family of whom we have record and whose first name is unknown, was a native of Clarion county, Pennsylvania, and during the major portion of his active career was engaged in diversified agriculture and stock raising on a finely improved farm in Porter township, Clarion county. His wife bore him three children: 1. Aaron, mentioned below. 2. David. 3. Rebecca Ann, married a Mr. Henry and went to Missouri. Mr. Kline died prior to 1859 and his widow married a Mr. Stauffer, of Porter township. Mr. and Mrs. Stauffer had two children: John, married a Miss Wiant; Levi, married a Miss Wike and is living on the old Stauffer homestead in Porter township. (II) Aaron, son of ___Kline, was born in Northampton county, Pennsylvania, in 1830, and he died in November, 1902. After his marriage he purchased the old Wiant homestead, on which his wife was born and reared, and there he spent most of his active life. In old age he removed to Rimersburg and there resided in retirement for a number of years prior to his demise. He had a farm of forty-eight acres, besides the old homestead of one hundred and six acres. He was a Democrat in politics and a member of the Reformed church. Aaron Kline married, in Porter township, Clarion county, Miss Elizabeth Wiant, who was born in 1834 and died in December, 1890. She was a daughter of Jacob and Hannah Wiant; who were early settlers in Porter township from Northampton county. Mr. Wiant owned a farm in Porter township, Clarion county, and there resided until death.He was a stalwart Democrat and with his wife was a member of the Reformed church. Children of Jacob and Hannah Wiant: 1. Henry, was killed in the Civil War. 2. William was a soldier in the Civil War and after the close of his military career returned to Pennsylvania and settled in Clarion, where he resided until death, in 1909. 3. Jacob is a minister in the Reformed church at Greenville, Pennsylvania. 4. Solomon was killed in the Civil War. 5. David, is engaged in the lumber business in Marionville, Pennsylvania. 6. Catherine is the wife of Harrison Slaughenhaupt, of Rimersburg. 7. Elizabeth, married Aaron Kline. Children born to Mr. and Mrs Kline: 1. Madison Sylvester, is engaged in the real estate business in Cleveland, Ohio; he married Carrie Luther. 2. Marian is the wife of J. M. Loughbaugh and they lived in Oklahoma. 3. Jennie was the wife of Harvey Cochran at the time of her demise. 4. David Ursines, mentioned below. 5. William Henry is a carpenter in Kansas City, Missouri. 6. Jacob Fair, married ___ Coysin; he is a farmer in Clarion county. 7. James Ross, married a Miss Sherman and they live in Oklahoma. 8. Charles Edward is a resident of Ridgway, Pennsylvania. 9. Emma E. is the wife of Ed Arnor, a farmer near Rimersburg. 10. Oliver Clyde, married Nettie Coysin; he is a farmer in Clarion county. (III) David Ursines, son of Aaron and Elizabeth (Wiant) Kline, was born in Porter township, Clarion county, Pennsylvania, December 13, 1859. He was educated in the common schools of Porter township and grew up on his father's farm, in the work and management of which he early became an active factor. As a young man he began to work in the oil region and is still interested in the oil business (1912). He has eleven acres of land at Blair's Corners and is the owner of extensive tracts in other neighborhoods, aggregating about one hundred and fifty acres. In politics he is a Democrat. He is a devout member of the Reformed church. Mr. Kline married, October 3, 1883, Miss Sarah Susannah Neely, a daughter of Cyrus and Mary (Shaffer) Neely, the former of whom is a son of John Neely. Mrs. Kline was born in Clarion county in July, 1864, and died January 9, 1908. Mr. Kline has no children. Please see corrections to this biography in Source Notes section below.
5	History of the Counties of Lehigh and Carbon by Alfred Mathews & Austin Hungerford, 1884, p. 290. Peter Klein, a native of Germany, settled in Weisenberg, adjoining the family of Grim. About 1800 he purchased a tract of land of Michael Mosser, which was warranted by John Deter Bouman. His son, Lorentz, moved upon this land, stayed a few years, and returned home. John Jacob Klein, a younger brother, married Susanna, a daughter of Peter Gross, of Whitehall township, and settled upon this farm about the year 1806. He lived upon it all his days, and died there. His sons were Jonathan, Charles, Joseph, Samuel, David, and Solomon. Jonathan and Samuel settled near Laury's Station, where they died. Charles settled in Weissenberg, on the homestead of his grandfather. Joseph settled in the upper part of the township, and rebuilt the old Fenstermacher mill in 1848. He lived at the place seventeen years, and then moved to Allentown, where he now resides. David settled on the homestead, and remained there ten years, and moved to North Whitehall, where he now lives.

Source notes

• Margin notes accompanying our photocopy of pg. 634,Genealogical and Personal History of the Allegheny Valley, Pennsylvania, presumably written by correspondent Kerry Kline (now deceased), indicate that the omitted name of the first subject, the father of Aaron Kline, should be David Kline, b. 1808, d. 14 Sept. 1833; furthermore that he was not a "native of Clarion Co.", but died in Northampton Co., Sacon Twp. He was a son of John Jacob Klein b. 1781, a grandson of Peter Klein b. 27 April 1741, and a great-grandson of Philip Wendel Klein.
  Our research confirms that David Kline does not appear in the census records of Clarion County. The three children however appear together in that county in 1850 where they live with their mother and step-father, John and Mary Staupher. The wording in History of the Allegheny Valley regarding a "finely improved farm in Porter township", attributed to the father, must therefore have been the farm of either his son Aaron, (who is said to have purchased the farm of his wife's parents, Jacob and Hannah Wiant, residents of Porter twp.), or to David Kline's widow Mary's 2nd husband, "a Mr. Stauffer of Porter township".Or, we must question whether the father was indeed David Klein.
• In the Klein biographical notes in " Histories of the Counties of Lehigh and Carbon", it is stated that David, son of John Jacob Klein, resided in Whitehall Twp. (Lehigh County) at time of writing (1884?). This conflicts with the death date of 1833. If David Klein, son of John Jacob Klein, was alive in 1884, he is not the father of Aaron Kline of Porter Twp., Clarion Co. PA.
• We do not know the sources of John Whitehouse (see Source #6), whether his connection of the David Klein of Clarion Co. PA to the Philip Wendel Klein family of Lehigh Co. PA comes from family knowledge and records, or from his research and deductions from sources such as those above.
