John Jacob Klein is not in my direct ancestry. He belongs to the Philip Wendel Klein family in the following way:


Jacob Klein, son of Peter Klein and grandson of Philip Wendel Klein married Susanna Gross, a daughter of Peter Gross, Esq. of Whitehall Twp. She was born 3 Aug. 1785 and died Oct. 14, 1872. They had 14 children. Jacob and Susanna are buried at Unkonville.

  • pg. 681. Peter Kline, youngest son of Philip Wendel, was born April 27, 1741, and died December 22, 1819. He married, in 1763, Margaret, daughter of Christopher and Margaret Stettler. She was born Dec. 13, 1741, and died Feb. 26, 1815. Peter Kline bought 260 acres of land from Philip Kleinert, in the southern part of Weisenberg township. A miller by trade, he erected a mill on the property about 1780, which he sold, with part of his farm, in 1803, to his son Lorentz. Peter Kline had these children: Margaret, born 1768; Lorentz; Jacob; Jonathan; Henry; Maria, wife of Michael Acker; and Mrs. George Smith. Lorentz Kline was born Nov. 12, 1773, and married Magdalena Knauss. They had no children. He was the owner of Kline's Mill for many years and died June 15, 1868.
  • pg. 681 Jacob Kline settled about 1806 upon a farm purchased by his father in Lowhill township. He was born Feb. 5, 1781, and died Feb. 11, 1857. He married, in 1803, Susanna Gross, a daughter of Peter Gross, Esq., of Whitehall township. Mrs. Kline was born Aug. 3, 1785, and died Oct. 14, 1872. They are buried at Unionville. Jacob Kline and his wife had fourteen children: Jacob, Maria, Jonathan, Charles, Joseph, Sarah, Catharine, Hettie, Samuel, David, Hannah, Susan, Solomon, and Mary. Maria married Hon. David Laury; Sarah married James Neuhard; Catharine married Reuben Neuhard; Hettie married Daniel Nagle, and moved to Ohio; Hannah married Ephraim T. Long; Susan married Josiah Scheirer, and Mary married Charles Deshler.

  • p. 290. Peter Klein, a native of Germany, settled in Weisenberg, adjoining the family of Grim. About 1800 he purchased a tract of land of Michael Mosser, which was warranted by John Deter Bouman. His son, Lorentz, moved upon this land, stayed a few years, and returned home. John Jacob Klein, a younger brother, married Susanna, a daughter of Peter Gross, of Whitehall township, and settled upon this farm about the year 1806. He lived upon it all his days, and died there. His sons were Jonathan, Charles, Joseph, Samuel, David, and Solomon. Jonathan and Samuel settled near Laury's Station, where they died. Charles settled in Weissenberg, on the homestead of his grandfather. Joseph settled in the upper part of the township, and rebuilt the old Fenstermacher mill in 1848. He lived at the place seventeen years, and then moved to Allentown, where he now resides. David settled on the homestead, and remained there ten years, and moved to North Whitehall, where he now lives. Solomon lived upon the homestead, and about 1873 built the present mill, now owned by James Schlicker. He later moved to Hokendauqua, and now resides in Allentown. Of the daughters, Polly became the wife of the Hon. David Laury, of Laury's Station. She died in 1878; Sarah (Mrs. James Newhard) now resides in North Whitehall; Catharine (Mrs. Reuben Newhard) resided in the same township till after the death of her husband, when she removed to Allentown, where she now resides; Hetty (Mrs. Daniel Nagle) moved to Ohio; Hannah (Mrs. Ephraim T. Long) settled in Egypt, Whitehall township; Maria (Mrs. Charles Deshler) died in 1870; Susanna (Mrs. Josiah Shirer) settled in North Whitehall.

    * Charles Klein, a son of Jacob Klein & wife Susanna nee Gross, was born in Lowhill Twp. Lehigh Co. PA 14 Oct. 1810; was baptized by the Rev. Henry Geisenheimer 4 Nov. 1810, with Daniel Schmidt & wife Catharina as witnesses.
    * He married first Levina Unger, a dau. of Christian Unger & wife Susanna nee Wesko; Levina was born in Upper Macungie Twp. 23 Dec. 1820, was baptized by the Rev. John Helffrich 1 Jan 1821 with Adam Heintz & wife Magdalena, witnesses, and died 2 Sept. 1859, aged 38 yrs, 8 mos, 9 days.
    * Charles Klein was married 2nd on 28 Oct 1860 by Rev. W. A. Helffrich to the widowed Helena Koch nee Unger, sister of his first wife.
    * The children of Charles & Levina, all born in Weisenberg Twp.,Lehigh Co., were:
    1. William Franklin, born 11 Sept. 1843, bapt. by Rev. Mr. Helffrich 22 Oct. 1843, Lawrence Klein & wife Magdalena witnesses;
    2. Sarah Susanna, born 23 July 1846, bapt. by Rev. Jer. Schindel 6 Sept. 1846, parents as witnesses;
    3. Louisa Helena, born 22 April 1852, bapt. by Rev. W. Helffrich 31 May 1852, parents as witnesses.


Source notes

  • Jacob Klein, son of John Jacob Klein, is mentioned among the 14 children listed in "History of Lehigh County PA", but is not among the six sons listed in "Histories of the Counties of Lehigh and Carbon". This suggests that the child Jacob possibly died young.
