10 "Our Snader, Schnader, Schneder, Schneider Family History", website by Mark D. Stotzer

Stotzer cites the following research of D. A. Beavens for the Swiss connection; Beavens' sources are unspecified:
"JACOB SCHNADER /1 SCHNEDER was born in Switzerland near the boundary line of Baden & Wurtemburg, and died in came to (sic) America 11 Sep 1729 on the ship "Allen". "

Of the ship "Allen" passengers, on the Captain's list is spelled "Snyder"; on the Oath of Allegiance list, "Schneider," and on the Oath of Abjuration list, "Schneder." The names are Christian, Jacob, and Mathias; Magdelin and Susanah. Apparently two of the men were married. It is believed that the home of the Schneders was in Switzerland, near the boundary line of Baden and Wurtemburg. After landing at Philadelphia they soon started for (Weberthal) Weaverland, where their friends, George, Henry and Jacob Weber had preceded them by several years. The Schneders were followers of Zwingli, but the Webers were Mennonites.
"Information about the early generations of the Schneder family can be found in a small pamphlet by the late Reverend Charles B. Schneder, The Schneder Family, prepared for the Family Reunion, September 15, 1929, 37 pages. The writer has a copy in his files."
Of the three Schneders, Christian remained in Weaverland and became the progenitor, among many others, of the late Aaron W. Snader, Esquire, once member of the Legislature of Pennsylvania. Mathias and Jacob went northeast and took up, by patent, 250 acres of land about where Center Church now stands, two miles south of Bowmansville. Jacob also purchased land from William Morris, the Welshman who received one of the first warrants for land within Brecknock Township.

Source notes

  • Several of our sources seem to go back to the work of J. Allan Skiles.
  • The references to Switzerland as place of origin may go back to the writing of Charles D. Spotts on the history of Bowmansville (Ref. 11). Switzerland appears to be a best guess, the Schnaders being from the border area of Baden & Wurtemburg. Spotts says that the Schnaders were following their friends the Webers, to Weaverland. Perhaps there was some knowledge that the Weber family were Swiss. Apparently (from Source #11) Weaverland was initially called "Weberthal", after the Weber family; this too may be the source of the assumption of Swiss origins. This bears further research.
  • Weaverland appears to be a small community near the boundary of Earl and East Earl townships, on the south side of the Conestoga River, Lancaster Co. PA. Terre Hill is nearby, north of the Conestoga River and nearer to Black Creek in East Earl Twp.

Conjecture

  • The "Allen" ship's list of passengers includes Christian and Susan Schneider, presumed to be Johan Christian Schnaeder and wife Susanna Margaretha Ranck. If so, their infant daughter Margaretha, born in Switzerland, would be about 4 months old at sailing; she is not included on the passenger list. In addition to them, two more Schneiders are listed, Mathew, and Magdalene. Mathew may be a brother or other relative of Christian, with Magdalene possibly his wife.

Research Wishlist

  • Research on origins of the Weber family (Swiss?) of Weberthal/Weaverland, boundary area of Earl Twp. & East Earl Twp.,, and Bowman Lancaster Co. PA.
