NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Barnard V. Stoughton is not in my direct ancestry. He is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Barnard V. Stoughton was one of ten children of John Stoughton, of English descent, and Catherine Covert, of Dutch descent. They had settled in Butler County, PA by about 1802, and were members of the Muddy Creek Baptist congregation.
Barnard (also seen as Bernard) migrated westward to Kansas where he farmed and raised a family.

11 Stoughton Family Genealogy and History research manuscript by Burke Stoughton, Apollo, PA, May-October 1996; G929.2 Butler Area Public Library, Butler, PA. (This source erroneously lists the father of the children on this page to be John Walker Stoughton (1767-1833), descended from a Jonathon Stoughton, Timothy Stoughton etc. family from E. Windsor, CT.)
Notification by email Jan 2008 from the author, Burke Stoughton, indicates that the name John Walker Stoughton was erroneous, and that no connection to the Connecticut Stoughtons is presently known to us. He does however believe that such connection does exist. Burke Stoughton cautions that his now outdated publication at Butler Library should be used with caution, as it contains several errors. Samuel Stoughton, for example, was the son of William Stoughton (not John Walker Stoughton), and was a brother of John W. Stoughton. Samuel Stoughton names a brother Andrew as an executor of his will. This Samuel Stoughton's 2nd wife's name was Catherine McCune, and would be the Catherine mentioned in his will.
Burke Stoughton's research forward from this point (ie. the Stoughton family in Butler Co. PA) agrees with our findings and he has useful additions. For the children of John W. Stoughton he lists:
  • Luke (died 1838/39), married Margaret unknown, resided Muddy Creek; his will mentions 6 minor children age 1-16
  • Andrew (born 1802)
  • John (born 1805)
  • Barnard (born 1817)
  • Jacob (died ~1841)
  • Euphama married unknown Logan
  • Hannah (died ~1845)
  • Jane.
We are in communication with Burke Stoughton, and anticipate additional new documentation per his research of this family.

Source notes

  • 1790, 1800 census not found.
  • 1800 Northampton Co. PA index of 5374 names (ancestry.com index) scanned for John or William Stoughton (Stoton, etc.) with no result.
  • In his will, John Stoughton leaves 4 of his sons (William, Luke, Andrew, & John) each one dollar, an indication that each had probably already received his inheritance or portion of land, possibly at marriage. To son Bernard, he leaves $120 plus another $125 to be delivered to him by his brother Jacob when Bernard reaches age 21. This argues that sons John and Bernard were two different individuals. Jeanne Eichelberger lists a son John Bernard Stoughton, combining these two names; her source is not given.
  • John Stoughton names as executors in his will of 1833 his son Jacob Stoughton and William Stoughton (Junior/Senior?). William's name is followed by what appears to be either "Junior", or "Senior" (written out, not abbreviated). John's father William was already dead in 1833. John's brother William seems the likely candidate, although Jeanne Eichelberger believes he may have either died or married and remained in NJ as no further evidence of him has been found. In that era, the terms senior and junior were used to indicate an older and younger set of relatives, not necessarily a father/son relationship. John's son William G. Stoughton, although he has no son named William, could be addressed as William Sr. because his brother, John Bernard Stoughton, has a son William. However, it seems logical that in writing the will, the wording in that case would have been "my sons Jacob Stoughton and William Stoughton. Or, William G. Stoughton may have been referred to as William Stoughton, Jr., being the grandson of John's father. If the son of John Bernard Stoughton were known as William Stoughton Jr., he would not be the person named as executor as he would be at most about 5 years old at that date. No other William Stoughton candidates are known at present, so one is led to believe that the executor is either William G. Stoughton, or that John Stoughton's brother William was indeed alive and residing in Butler County in 1822. It is possible that the word following William Stoughton in the will is neither junior or senior but something other.
  • Per contributor James Voltz, one of Jane Stoughton (b. 1821) & Thomas Boyle's children was Martha Boyle(b. ~1840's?) who married John Edward Hagan. They have not been located in the census, but it is said that he was a Missouri farmer. In the 1880 census of Barber Co. Kansas, Lake City township, the family of Thomas B. Hagan, age 45, lives next to the family of Barned(sic) V. Stoughton, age 61. The birth date of Thomas B. Hagan (~1835) puts him in the same generation as John Edward Hagan and wife Martha Boyle. Note that his daughter was born in Missouri.
