Immigrant from Germany 1744
Philip Wendel Klein and his descendants are well documented in the history of Lehigh County. He is of particular interest to us because our Klein ancestors also came from Lehigh County, and we believe they descend from the Johannes Klein who arrived with Philip Wendel Klein on the ship "Phoenix" in 1744.
What we know of the children of Philip Wendel Klein suggests his sons were too young to be included in the list of mature males on ship. It is interesting that one of the immigrant men was a John Adam Klein.
Philip Wendel Klein settled in Weisenberg township, of what became Lehigh County. Johan Jacob grew up there and in 1761 took over Klein Mill which occupied part of their land. He married Anna Eva while in Weisenberg township and their first child, Maria Magdalena was born in May of 1767. The child was baptized soon afterward at the Ziegel(brick) Church with his parents as sponsors. Eventually, several of his family members, including his parents, would be buried at the Ziegel Church cemetery. In 1769 he is reported to have sold the homestead and moved to Salisbury township, Lehigh County. Salisbury township does not show him on the tax rolls Of 1772, and the record of him in Pennsylvania seems to end.
In 2021, the research of James Funkhouser was made available to this website. He has located several sources for a Johan Jacob Klein and Anna Eva nee Dusong, in Frederick County, Virginia. There is convincing evidence that the Johan Jacob of the two locations are the same, but a couple sources who report conflicting data. The sources for the two locations will be presented separately, and Mr Funkhouser's accompanying notes are included as received.
