Elliot Stoughon was working with 2 others, Hilary Whittington and Perry Wick, setting timbers at a mine near Claytonia. Stoughton was killed by falling slate and earth, the others survived but could not rescue him before he died. Elliot Stoughton was age 36, and lived with his mother Margaret Stoughton on the farm. |

- The relationship of Margaret L. Hockenberry, wife of Jacob Bernard Stoughton, to our direct line Hockenberry ancestry is presently unknown. Her mother, Sarah Freeman, was age 77 in 1880 and apparently a widow. (see 1880 census above)
