Samuel is 74 and Elizabeth 70 in 1840. This is Samuel Church living with his wife and two families of his children and grandchildren. Erastus Church is 32 and Caroline Church 8 and the four oldest sons of Erastus and Lucy are 7, 5, 3, and 1 in 1840. These all agree with persons in the above list. Lucy Whitten should be 32 also and this is not in agreement. |

13 | Obituary for Uzziel B. Church from the 14 Oct 1916 edition of the Terre Haute Tribune. It indicates that Uzziel was born in Greenfield, IN on 23 Dec 1837 and died at his home near Auburn [IN or IL? not stated] on 13 Oct 1916. At the age of 17 he moved with his father's family to Terre Haute, IN. He was a Union soldier during the Civil War, enlisting with the 11th IN Infantry at the outbreak of the war and again with the 16th IN Infantry until the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge. After the war, he moved to New London, MO, and lived there for 9 years. He married Phebe Overman in Perry, MO, on 24 Mar 1867. Together, they had 8 children--2 boys, 6 girls. One son, Will Church, died 20 years prior to Uzziel's death. Still living are his wife and seven children, Frank Church of Terre Haute, Maggie Smittkamp of Marshall, Mattie Barlow of St. Louis, MO, Etta Shaffner of Martinsville, Cora Church, Goldie Brosman of Marinsville, and Mary Husted of Casey. He had 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren at the time of his death. Funeral was Monday, 16 Oct 1916 at the Auburn church. | Original available from Vigo Co. Public Library |
