  • Dr Egle includes a statement of Lettitia Lytle, daughter of George McCullough: George McCullough came from Ireland to America prior to the Revolution. He was a stone mason by trade, landed at Philadelphia and from there went to Northumberland, to erect a barn for a Quaker, was drafted about 1774. (In Northumberland) he met with Jno. McKee and others from Tuscarora Valley, and whom he accompanied home after the service of the draft,&there he met Sarah Hoagg, in 1775 whom he married, and resided there when he again was called into service, about 1776. , He served his time, returned home to farming, until again called out in 1778. Hugh Gray was with him in '78. Lettitia was born in Feb. '79, after his return from the war. He died in Sept. '84 leaving but two children living, Lettitia and Ann, the latter 2 years younger than the older. "My mother again married, a man the name of Hamilton Grimes, in the year of '89, by whom she had two sons and a daughter, named Robert, George and Jane, and lived on in Tuscarora Valley to her death in 1829 or 1830. I married Robert Lytle on 6th July 1802 and lived with him until August 1847 when he died at Hollidaysburg Blair County, Pa. My sister Ann McCulloch married Moses Sturgeon in 1800 and lived with him until 1850, when he died. She died in 1851, both died in Shelby County, Ohio."

  • Tuscarora Valley was in Cumberland County until 1789 when it became part of Mifflin County. That portion of Mifflin County became part of Juniata County in 1831.
  • The family of J. M. Lytle is found in Edensburg, Cambria Co. PA in 1860 (ancestry.com pg. 19). J. M. Lytle is not listed. Wife Mary is living in a hotel, with children Wm. P. age 13, Robt. F. age 11, and Martha R. age 6.

* Note: The George McCullough entry (31300) could be the spouse of Sarah Hoge but the 3 boys in the census are not known to be Sarah's; the 2 daughters are documented elsewhere. This appears to be the closest match, from 5 George McCulloughs listed in PA in 1790.

Listed in the same township are the households of a Robert McKee (12200); Robert Hogg (14200); William Robinson (10100); John Robinson (14200). These surnames are those of the spouses of the children of Robert Hoge, though not these individuals. The cluster of names suggests that this could be the community of residence of Robert Hoge's family.
