|'''Moon Family of Western Pennsylvania''' website on Family Tree Maker, author Robert Gregg Moon, with 8 generations of the descendants of Richard Hines. This site suggests "from unconfirmed source" that Richard Hines' wife was ''Jane Morrison.'' Site lists end notes & sources.<br> Lists daughter Susan Hines as wife of Thomas Brandon, & says that "all of her children were born in Muddy Creek Twp. except James, born in KY".  Doesn't seem to list the other children. We question accuracy of this marriage; please see Conjecture section, below.

* The name "Hines" is sometimes seen spelled "Hinds", as on the civilian gravestone for Richard's son, [[Richard Hines, Jr.]]; also in the will of [[James Hoge]], were it is stated that land of [[James Hoge]] borders the land of Richard Hinds. (James Hoge's dates are 1766-1840, so the reference could be to ''Richard Hines'' (1751-1854), or [[Richard Hines, Jr.]] (1782-1876))

*In ''Hines Genealogies'', and on p. 862 of ''20th Century History of Butler & Butler Co.'' it is stated that Richard Hines served in the Revolutionary War, from March 1777 to April 1778 per the ''Hines Genealogies''.  If this is true, he came to America alone, fought in the war, and then returned to Ireland for a number of years, if we are to believe the report in ''The Wimer Family'', the ''1895 History of Butler County'', and the 1850 US Census that his children were all born in Ireland.  Richard Hines' children were born in 1772, '74, '76, 1780, and later. He could have been absent from Ireland in 1777-78.

* ''20th Century History of Butler & Butler County PA'' by McKee, pg. 861 re. George W. Hines makes a generational error: George W. Hines was a ''great''-grandson of Richard Hines & Elizabeth Brandon. He was a grandson of Richard Hines, Jr.  This calls into question which Richard Hines (Sr. or Jr.) is referred to as the veteran of the Revolutionary War. We know however that Richard Hines, Jr. served in the War of 1812. His gravestone makes no mention of the Revolutionary War. Presumably the Revolutionary War reference is meant to be Richard Sr., husband of Elizabeth Brandon.

* Is Susan Hines Gibson also Susannah Hines Brannan?  From the biographical sketch of Robert Barron, (p. 1244, 1895 Hist. of Butler Co.) grandson of Susan Hines, it is apparent that all of the children of Richard Hines eventually immigrated to America. Susan Hines was married in Ireland to James Gibson, and their daughter Margaret Gibson married David Barron.  David left wife Margaret and son Robert Barron in Ireland, came to the U.S. and died in Steubenville, OH.  Margaret remarried to George Dixon.  Robert Barron came to the U.S. when age 17, (so, about 1849), and shortly went to live with his grandmother Susan Gibson of Worth Twp., Butler Co. Therefore, Susan must have immigrated before 1849. As the biography does not mention his grandfather, it is possible that Susan Hines Gibson immigrated after her husband James Gibson died in Ireland (or,that Robert Barron came to live with her after James Gibson died in the U.S.).  In any case, she appears to be a widow.  <br> Our ancestor William Brannan married a Susanna Hines, and the question remains whether she was the daughter of Richard Hines.  If so, it would be her second marriage. Born in 1776, she would be aged about 73 in 1849, although she may have immigrated much earlier.  Was she the 2nd wife of Wm. Brannan and not the father of his children, of did William marry a different Susannah Hines?  William and Susanna Brannan are buried together at Wolf Creek cemetery, as is usual for the parents of children to be buried together, when there is more than one spouse.<br>The Wm. Brannan and Richard Hines families do have the connection that Elizabeth Brandon, daughter of Wm. Brannan, married Richard Hines, Jr.  If Susannah were a daughter of Richard Hines, then Elizabeth Brandon would be marrying her uncle, which is extremely unlikely. We conclude that this Susannah Hines is not the daughter of Richard, but expect some relationship not yet established.

* '''Was Richard Hines a veteran of the Revolution?'''  Two of our sources ("Hines Genealogies", and "20th Century History Butler Co." ) say that Richard Hines was a veteran of the Revolution, although he had 6 children born in Ireland after 1780.  One question that arose is whether his land in Brady Twp. lay north of the boundary between Donation Lands (to Veterans) and Depreciation Lands (sold to anyone, to raise funds to repay veterans paid with depreciated dollars). The land of Richard Hines on Muddy Creek,(now Lake Arthur) Brady Twp., appears to lay in District 1 of Donation Land, suggesting that he was indeed a veteran.<br>See:http://www.usgwarchives.org/maps/pa/county/donation.jpg<br>See also: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pabutler/1883/83-03.htm for description of Donation lands, and http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pabutler/1883/img/83p024a.jpg for Butler Co. map of Donation and Depreciation lands.

* Searches for Richard Hines in the 1810 and 1800 census data on Ancestry.com yielded no viable candidates.  In 1810, there were Richard Hines heads of household in VA and NC, and a Richard Hins in SC, but none had a male over 45.  Richard Hines should be nearly 60.  A search of Muddy Creek and Slipperyrock Twps gave no Hines families, but there were two listed as Mires (or Mirer).  One had a male >45.  This household was headed by a J.(?) Mires.  The penmanship is not totally clear, but the script differs from H's elsewhere in that document.  The only Hines family in PA that had both male and female individuals old enough to be Richard and his wife was headed by a "John Hines" and was in Dauphin Co.  Several Hines household in PA had males >45 in the 1800 census, but none was particularly well placed to match our previous information.  It is unclear from previous data that Richard was "in country" at the time of this census.

*'''Was George Hines a bachelor or married?''' From the fact of his gravestone inscription being on the marker shared with his parents, brother & 2 unmarried sisters, we assume he never married.  However, there is an 1820 census, Slippery Rock Twp. Butler Co. PA for a George Hinds age 45 or over with 1 male age 10-16, 1 female age 45 or over, & marked "foreigners not naturalized".  If George was born in 1785 as we believe, he would have been only 35 in 1820, so perhaps this is an uncle, or unrelated.

Richard Hines Family Plot

In the Hines family plot in 1996: the large 4-sided stone was broken; the long obelisk section lying to the right of the large marker belongs on top of it, and the smaller finial , atop of the large stone in the photo, belongs at the apex. Both the rounded stones to left and right are inscribed "J. H.", perhaps for Jane Hines, mother and daughter. Two additional small stones to the right are illegible.
In 2007 the obelisk and finial sections had been totally removed.

Lists daughter Susan Hines as wife of Thomas Brandon, & says that "all of her children were born in Muddy Creek Twp. except James, born in KY". Doesn't seem to list the other children. We question accuracy of this marriage; please see Conjecture section, below.

[edit] Source notes

  • The name "Hines" is sometimes seen spelled "Hinds", as on the civilian gravestone for Richard's son, Richard Hines, Jr.; also in the will of James Hoge, were it is stated that land of James Hoge borders the land of Richard Hinds. (James Hoge's dates are 1766-1840, so the reference could be to Richard Hines (1751-1854), or Richard Hines, Jr. (1782-1876))
  • In Hines Genealogies, and on p. 862 of 20th Century History of Butler & Butler Co. it is stated that Richard Hines served in the Revolutionary War, from March 1777 to April 1778 per the Hines Genealogies. If this is true, he came to America alone, fought in the war, and then returned to Ireland for a number of years, if we are to believe the report in The Wimer Family, the 1895 History of Butler County, and the 1850 US Census that his children were all born in Ireland. Richard Hines' children were born in 1772, '74, '76, 1780, and later. He could have been absent from Ireland in 1777-78.
  • 20th Century History of Butler & Butler County PA by McKee, pg. 861 re. George W. Hines makes a generational error: George W. Hines was a great-grandson of Richard Hines & Elizabeth Brandon.

[edit] Conjecture

  • Is Susan Hines Gibson also Susannah Hines Brannan?
Our ancestor William Brannan married a Susanna Hines, and the question remains whether she was the daughter of Richard Hines. If so, it would be her second marriage. Born in 1776, she would be aged about 73 in 1849, although she may have immigrated much earlier. Was she the 2nd wife of Wm. Brannan and not the father of his children, of did William marry a different Susannah Hines? William and Susanna Brannan are buried together at Wolf Creek cemetery. As it is usual for the father to be buried with the mother of his children when there is more than one spouse, we conclude that Susanna Hines was the mother of the children of William Brannan, but probably not the same person as Susanna Hines, daughter of Richard Hines.
The Wm.
  • Was Richard Hines a veteran of the Revolution? Two of our sources ("Hines Genealogies", and "20th Century History Butler Co." ) say that Richard Hines was a veteran of the Revolution, although he had 6 children born in Ireland after 1780. One question that arose is whether his land in Brady Twp. lay north of the boundary between Donation Lands (to Veterans) and Depreciation Lands (sold to anyone, to raise funds to repay veterans paid with depreciated dollars). The land of Richard Hines on Muddy Creek,(now Lake Arthur) Brady Twp., appears to lay in District 1 of Donation Land, suggesting that he was indeed a veteran.
    See:http://www.usgwarchives.org/maps/pa/county/donation.jpg
See also: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pabutler/1883/83-03.htm for description of Donation lands, and http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pabutler/1883/img/83p024a.jpg for Butler Co. map of Donation and Depreciation lands.
  • Census searches for Richard Hines in the 1810 and 1800 census data on Ancestry.com yielded no viable candidates.

1810 census pa dauphin swatara pg 5.jpg
  • Was George Hines a bachelor or married? From the fact of his gravestone inscription being on the marker shared with his parents, brother & 2 unmarried sisters, we assume he never married.
