  • Considerations re. "born in Virginia":
    1) Virginia, until the time of the Civil War, included present-day West Virginia, which borders on SE Pennsylvania.
    2) Most of the SW corner of PA up to the Ohio River was claimed by Virginia. Many people in this area listed VA as birthplace.
    3) In the mid-1700's, the governor of VA encouraged settlement of Shenandoah Valley, as a buffer zone to prevent Indian raids into the area east of the Blue Ridge. Most of these settlers came from Maryland & PA, especially from the Mennonite areas.
