  • Deposition of Jacob Kline, 31 Dec. 1897

State of Pennsylvania, County of Clarion}SS
In the matter of pension claim No. 665273 of Susan Mitchell widow of Joseph Mitchell Co B 169 Pa Inf. On the 31st of December AD 1897 before me a notary public in and for said County and State personally appeared Jacob Kline aged 67 years, a resident of Ashland township, whose Post Office is Fern PA, who being qualified in due form of law deposeth as follows. Have known Joseph Mitchell ever since he was a boy and up to the time of his death. Have known Susan Mitchell ever since she was a child before Joseph Mitchell was married to Susan Kline. I know that neither were married before. My reason for knowing the above facts are living near each other during his younger days and seeing Susan Kline nearly every day up to the time of their marriage and I know that if either of them had been married I would have heard of it and I am satisfied that they could not have been married without it being publicly known. At the time of Joseph Mitchell's death October 17, 1897, Susan Mitchell owned about one hundred acres of land in Ashland township clarion County Pa and she still owns the said land and the said land is very poor, about six acres being all that is really fit to work. The balance of the land is stoney and of very little value. Her personal effects consist of two horses, five cows, one mowing machine, one waggon, one pair of sleds, one buggy and house hold effects. Her personal effects would not sell for over two hundred dollars if she would sell all she has. I know that she has no other source of income than her daily labor and if she would sell the farm today I do not believe that she could get one cent over six hundred dollars for it. And I am satisfied that if she trys to conduct the farm since her husband's death that she will not make enough off it to pay fo the labor that will be required to do the work on the farm. I would not take the farm rent free and keep Susan Mitchell for I know that I could not make enough off the farm to keep her. She has not sold anything off the farm since November 9, 1897. I further certify that I am not interested in the prosecution of this case. I further certify that this statement was written in my presence by David W. Lewis at Knox PA the 31st day of December 1897 without any written or printed instructions other than my oral testimony. (His signature) Jacob Kline

  • Deposition of A. H. Shorts, 31 Dec. 1897

State of Pennsylvania, County of Clarion}SS
In the matter of Pension Claim No. 665273 of Susan Mitchell widow of Joseph Mitchell. On the 31st day of December AD 1897 before me a Notary Public in and for said County and State personally appeared A. H. Shorts age 47 years, a resident at Ashland township and whose Post Office is Fern, who being qualified in due form at law deposeth as follows. I am acquainted with Susan Mitchell and have known her for 40 years. Knew her as Susan Kline that was before she was married to Joseph Mitchell. She was then a young girl and had never been married until she was married to the said Joseph Mitchell and I know that they lived together up to the time of his death and I know that the said Susan Mithcell is the owner of about one hundred acres of land located in the township of Ashland Clarion County Penna. The assessed value of the said land is about $800.00 and the total value of all property assessed to her is $917.00 and I consider that the amount is full value for all she owns. The $117.00 of valuation consists of horses and cows, that is in consideration of the farm and live stock. I further certify that this statement was written by David W. Lewis at Knox Pa this 31st day of Dec 1897 in my presence and at my dictation without any written or printed instruction other than my oral testimony. (His signature:) A. H. Shorts

  • Deposition of William Kline, 7 Jan. 1898

State of Pennsylvania, County of Clarion}SS
In the matter of Pension Claim No. 665273 of Susan Mitchell widow of Joseph Mitchell Co. B, 169 Pa Inf. On the seventh day of January AD 1898 before me a Notary Public in and for said County and State Personally appeared William Kline aged 46 years, a resident of Pine Grove township Venango County Pa whose Post Office is Venus Pa, who being qualified in due form at Law deposeth as follows. Knew Joseph Mitchell ever since I was five years old and have known Susan Mitchell his Widow as long as time as I can remember any thing. Knew them to live together as Husband and Wife ever since I knew them to be married and they lived together as Husband and Wife up to the time of his death. Joseph Mitchell was not married until he harried Susan Kline nor was Susan Kline married until she was married to Joseph Mitchell. My reasons for knowing the above facts are that I was in their company a great deal in my young days and if either had been married before their marriage to each other I would have known it by report if in no other way. At the time of Joseph Mitchell's death October 17, 1897 Susan Mitchell owned about one hundred acres of land in Ashland township Clarion County Pa and she still owns the said land and the said land is very poor, not more than about twelve acres being producing land, the balance of the land is very rough and of very little value and if the farm was sold today it is doubtful if it would sell for four hundred dollars. Her personal effects consist of two horses, five cows, two calfs, household furniture and some traps as we generally call things on the farm that are not of any particular value. And I ddo not think that what she owns outside of the land would sell for two hundred and fifty dollars. I am satisfied that if she trys to conduct the farm that she will not be able to raise enough in crops or stock to pay a man to work it and she can not work the farm herself and she has no other source of income except the farm and I know from my knowledge of the farm that I would not take the farm and keep Susan Mitchell during her life for it. I also know that since her husband's death she has not sold any thing off the farm. I further certify that this statement was written in my presence by David W. Lewis at Knox Pa the 7th day January AD 1898 without any written or printed instructions other than my oral testimony. I further certify that I am not concerned in the prosecution of this case and have no interest in it. (His signature:) William Kline
