R1 Gordy Stith website (at http://www.gordy-stith.com/genealogy.htm.): Robert Smith's research notes Sara Jane Todd's maiden name was STEWART and that her mother, Elizabeth Stewart, was born in Ireland.
R2 1860 United States Federal Census, Western Division, Mecklenburg Co, NC, page 38. Census dated 25 June 1860. Lines 28-34: Dwelling 275, family 293: Mary S. Todd, 55, widow, $125 real property; John, 36, laborer; Martha, 16; Dwelling 275, family 294: William, 12, in school; Mary 9, in school; Calvin, 5; Dwelling 275, family 296: George King, 22, laborer, married within the year; Mary King, 22, m. within the year. All born NC.
The age is correct for Mary S. Love (Todd). Her son John should only be 25 according to source 7 above, but there are some clear errors in the record here.
The George and Mary King are the right age to be George W. King and Mary Isabell Todd, son and dau.-in-law of Colin C. King. Argyle King also had a son George King, born about 1840.

The age is correct for Mary S. Love Todd. The record for John W. Todd is again a problem since Source 6 above lists his death in 1865 and indicates no wife named Mary. The page also includes four additional Todd families.

R4 1880 United States Federal Census, District 121, Paw Creek Twp, Mecklenburg Co, NC, page 8. Census dated 3 June 1880.
Lines 34-40:J.W. Todd, 56, carpenter; M.M., wife, 45, keeping house; M.L., 29, dau.; A.A., 18 (step?)dau.; R.W., som, 11, can not write; J.A., dau., 5; M.S., mother, 75, widow, can not write.
The family of J.T. Love is on lines 23-27.
This corresponds to John W. Todd, his wife and children, and his mother, Mary S. Love Todd. Again the date of death for John W. Todd is a problem.

R5 United States Federal Census for 1830, 1820, 1810. Mecklenburg Co, NC. Page 51, 1830 census has family headed by David Love: 1 male 5-10, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 40-50. Page 13, 1820 census has family headed by David Love: 3 males >10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 female <10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 26-44, 1 female >44. 1810 census, Capt. McKinly District, page 4 has family headed by David Love: 3 males <10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female <10, 1 female 26-44.
The ages here are consistent with this being a single family over the span of 20 years. There is some variation in children, but the adults work. Mary S. Love would be 5 in 1910 and 15 in 1920. By the 1930 census she may be married, possibly to Robert Alexander Todd. This is the only Love family listed in the 1820 and 1830 census in Mecklenburg County (according to the Ancestry.com index). Unverifiable family tree citations in Ancestry.com also list David Love as Mary S. Love's father.
Also on these pages are several families headed by Todd's and Hipps. In the 1830 census, John W. King is a few lines away. ,br>The 1800 census does not list any Love families in Mecklenburg Co. In 1810 there is a family headed by Thomas Love in a different district.

R6 Research of Donna Joy Johnson, indicates that Mary S. Love was possibly the daughter of David Love and Jane Thompson and the granddaughter of John Love and Sarah Sharp.
"Notes for Mary S. Love

Mary S. "Polly" Love is the probable daughter of David Love and Jean Thompson of Paw Creek, but this is not proven.

It appears probable that Mary "Polly" Todd nee Love was left a widow when her husband died before 1850. Her husband was probably the Robert A. Todd who died in 1847 and was buried at Paw Creek Presbyterian Church. I have not found an estate for him in Mecklenburg County. In 1850, Mary appears to reside as head of household with a son, George and three daughters, Sarah, Mary and Adeline. It also appears that John W. Todd of the same household but another family listing, is her son, with a wife Adeline and a son Allison. In 1860, Mary S. Todd, widow, resides as head of household with her son, John, who appears himself to be a widower. Daughter Martha age 16 is probably daughter Adeline who was age 6 in 1850. The children William Todd age 12 and Mary Todd age 9 are children of John W. Todd. William was listed as Allison in 1850. His cemetery marker at Paw Creek Presbyterian Church lists him as William A. Todd. In 1860, David L. Love, her nephew, resides with a neighbor of Mary S. Todd. In 1870, Mary S. Todd resides with her son John W. Todd. In 1880, Mary S. Todd is 75 years old, and resides with her son John W. Todd, just a few houses away from her brother, Joseph T. Love."
