Williams, 31, born Mar 1868, married to Mary A. Williams, 30, born Apr 1870. They live with three children and three boarders: son John D. Williams, 7, born Mar 1893; son Will M. Williams, 3, born May 1895; son James M. Williams, 1, born May[?] 1898; boarder James Collie[?], 30, born Jan 1870; boarder Archabel[??] Birkie, 28, born Dec 1872, and boarder "Walker Beacher", 25, born Jan 1875. Edmon M. Williams and Mary A. Williams have been married for 8 years. Mary A. Williams has born four children, three of which are still living. All of the Williams family and their parents were born in NC, and the same with Mr. Birkie and Mr. Beacher. Mr. Collie and his parents were born in VA. Edmon M. Williams' occupation is listed as "Cloth Inspector / Mill". Mary A. Williams' occupation is "seamstress." John D. Williams is listed as being in school. Mr. Birkie's occupation is illegible. These census pages are dated 13 and 14 Jun 1900, respectively. Margin notes by the enumerator indicate that the Williams family lived on "Davidson St." Furthermore, this was the first record from that street, suggesting that perhaps they lived on a corner lot.

Williams age 40, mother of 7 children, 6 now living. They live with six children: son John D. Williams, 17; son William M. Williams, 14; son James M. Williams, 11; son Walker F. Williams, 8; son Lee[?] Otto Williams, 6; and daughter Gertrude Williams, 2. E.M. Williams and Mary A. Williams have been married for 18 years. Mary A. Williams has born seven children, six of which are still living. Everyone and their parents were born in NC. Everyone but Gertrude can speak English. Everyone but Gertrude and Otto can read English. Everyone but Gertrude, Otto, and Walker can write English. All of the children except Gertrude and Otto attended school within the census year. E.M. Williams' occupation is listed as a mail carrier for the postal service. John D. Williams' occupation is listed as a sign painter in a shop. The census page is dated 16 Apr 1910.

He was a white male, married to Corinna Lowder Williams. He was born 21 Mar 1893 in Montgomery Co., NC. He worked as a sign painter. His father's name was Edmund Williams and his mother was Mary Ann Scarborough. Cause of death was [illegible] embolism. No autopsy was performed. He was buried on 23 Jan 1956 at Oaklawn Cemetery, Mecklenburg Co., NC, by McEwen Funeral Service.

9 The 1920 census for Edwin M. Williams indicates that he is a widower. Since no census data for Mary Ann Williams can be located in 1920, it seems clear that she died between 1910 and 1920.
10 Marriage License dated 15 Jun 1892 (and certificate of marriage dated 19 Jun 1892) for Edmund M. Williams, 24, son of M. C. Williams (dead) and F. A. McDonald (alive); and Mary A. Scarboro, 28, daughter of John Scarboro (alive) and Eliza Scarboro (dead). Everyone lives in Montgomery County. The marriage was conducted by H.M. Scarbrough in Erie Mills, Mt. Gilead Township, Montgomery County, NC. The witnesses were J.M. Ballard of Erie Mills, ?. T. Br???, and Ellen(?) Mcgreg?? of Mt. Gilead.

Their license was issued on 15 Jun 1892 and the wedding took place on 19 Jun 1892 at Erie Mills. Justice of the Peace H. M. Scarboro performed the marriage and the witnesses were J. M. Ballard, C. T. Green, and Ellen McQuage.

Source notes

  • The spelling of Scarbrough seems to have been applied rather randomly throughout the historical documents. Scarboro, Scrborough, Scarbrough and Scarbro are all found, sometimes for the same person.
  • The birth year of Mary Ann Scarbrough is not well defined. The census documents point to either 1868 or 1870, the marriage license to 1864.
