The family seems to be moving northeast from Salisbury to Randolph to Guilford.

The older female children do not match exactly, but it is possible that one of the sons had married. This might explain the young children since Joshua and wife are a bit old by now.

Research

The material in this section is for research leads only. We do not wish to imply any connection to our family at present, nor suggest its use without additional confirmation.

  • The census for 1850 on gave no record of Joshua Burton in NC, but a probable in York, SC..
  • The 1800 and 1790 census show Issac Burton in Guilford and Rowan Counties. These counties were originally part of the same county (Rowan) Guilford was split off from Rowan and then Randolph from Guilford.
    In 1790 the family consisted of 2 males >16, 5 males <16 and 5 females. In 1800 there were 3 males <10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male >44, 2 females <10, 1 female 10-16, 2 females 16-26, and 1 female >45.

  • 1870 census shows an Elizabeth Burton (head of household) (age 77) living with a Robert Burton (age 58) in Lincoln County, NC. This might be the widowed wife of Joshua Burton with a son born 1812. The ages don't match between this census and the 1850 census (source 5), but that is not unusual.
