NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Johann Peter Hachenberg is not in my direct ancestry. No relationship is currently known to exist. Johan Peter is one of four early immigrants to America (1720-1764) found to have name variants of Hachenburg or the Anglicized Hockenberry.

THE HOCKENBERRY NAME & EARLY IMMIGRANTS
The name Hockenberry is one of several Anglicized forms of Hachenburger (such as Hachenberger, Hockenbury, Hillberry, etc.) In earlier times when individuals did not have set surnames, immigrants were often distinguished from others in their new location by a name reflecting their place of origin. thus, anyone from Hachenburg could be know as a Hachenburger. This appelation was probably applied more than once, and to individuals not necessarily related.
Records indicate several early immigrants to America with variants of this name; their relationship, if any, is not yet established.

1 Manuscript: Peter Hockenberry and Descendants of his Son, John Hockenberry by Edith and Horace Renick, 1975, gives an overview of the early Hockenberry immigrants to America. "Johann Peter Hachenberg was born in Germany in 1741, arrived in Philadelphia in 1764 on the English ship "Janeffer"; settled in Bucks Co., Pa; fougnt in the American Rev. War and became an officer just before becoming a prisoner of war. After the war he and his family moved to an area which later became Snyder Co., PA. His will named his children: Catherine, Christina, Peter Jr., John, Michial, and Micheal." The Renecks' information on Johann Peter Hachenberg came from Mrs. Harold Albrecht of Manhatten, Kansas.

Conjecture

Johann Peter Hachenberg was 23 years younger than our direct line ancestor Peter Hockenberry, and arrived in America 14 years after Peter arrived. Based solely on surname, it is thought that the two may have come from the same town (Hachenburg)in Germany. If he was related to Peter Hockenberry b. 1718, he was likely a cousin or nephew rather than a brother.
