NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Herbert Hockenbury is not in my direct ancestry. He is possibly a brother or cousin of
Peter Hockenberry, b. (~1718)

THE HOCKENBERRY NAME & EARLY IMMIGRANTS
The name Hockenberry is one of several Anglicized forms of Hachenburger (such as Hachenberger, Hockenbury, Hillberry, etc.) In earlier times when individuals did not have set surname spellings, immigrants were often distinguished from others in their new location by a name reflecting their place of origin. Thus, anyone from Hachenburg could be know as a Hachenburger. This appelation was probably applied more than once, and to individuals not necessarily related.
Records indicate several early immigrants to America with variants of this name; their relationship, if any, is not yet established.

Source notes

  • The 1690 birth date of Herbert Hockenbury, given in the Renick research (Source 1 above) is unlikely, as his listed grandchildren were born in the 1770's, thus suggesting his children were born in the late 1740's-1750's. This birthdate would make Herbert age ~50 when the younger children were born. If there is a Herbert Hockenbury of this birth date, he is possibly not the person described on this page.

Conjecture

There are more than one Harmon Hockenbury/Hockenberry of similar age in the record. One of these may have been related to our direct line ancestor Peter Hockenberry (b. 1718). A Harmon Hockenberry is known to have lived near Peter in Franklin Co. PA for a time. However, Harmon Hockenbury son of Herbert lived in Sussex Co., NJ and was buried there at LaFayette, near Newton, NJ.
