UNDOCUMENTED ANCESTRY

We find numerous sources with tantalizing data, but hesitate to adopt their findings when:

  • the lines of descent conflict from one web source to another.
  • documentation & sources are absent or insufficient
  • the sources listed are unavailable to us, so that scope or ambiguity can't be assessed

We offer this page as an ancestral possibility, with the caveat that it is unconfirmed by us.

Hans Teunise Covert was born in Brooklyn, New Amsterdam in 1657/58. His name is also seen as "Jan", the Dutch form of the German "Hans" (short for Johan/Johannes). Throughout the Covert records of New York and New Jersey for Hans Teunise Covert,"Johannes", "Hans" and "Jan" appear to be used interchangeably, sometimes in the same document. (With similar, reversed names, the father, Teunis Janszentje Covert, is commonly recorded as "Teunis", while son Hans Teunise Covert is commonly recorded as "Hans" or "Jan".)
The old Dutch colony at New Amsterdam became New York, under British rule, in 1664. Both father and son took the oath of allegiance in 1687. Hans Teunise Covert and wife Jannetje Brokaw began their family with the birth of daughter Catherine Covert in 1688 in Brooklyn. The next five children were born 1690-1699 in Dutch Kills, Long Island NY; and finally two daughters born 1706-1709 in Somerset, New Jersey.
His will, signed as Jan Kuvers, yeoman of Millstone, Somerset Co., NJ, was dated 2 May 1719. His death appears to have come four years later, as the will is probated on 13 April 1723. In it he names his wife (as "Jane"), his 3 sons and 5 daughters.

  • Derivation of Covert name; probably French Huguenot
  • Teunis Janse Covert & wife Barbara Lucas immigrated 1651 from Heemstede, North Holland. Their 8 children included Hans (John) Teunnise Covert, born in Brooklyn, married Jannetie/Jannitze Brokaw. Eight children of Hans Teunnise Covert & Jannitze Brokaw included Bragon Covert, bapt. in Brooklyn, m. Anna Slover of Fordham Manor. Their 8 children included Lucas Covert, bapt. at Somerville, married Cornelia Van Zandt.

  • Derivation of Covert surname: possibly from Coevorden or Koevorde, fortified town in Province of Drenthe, Holland SSE of Assen. This town-name form has not been seen in connection with:
"Theunis, whose surname is variably recorded as Coevors, Coevers, Couverts, etc.; but has been seen in two instances connected with his alleged children. These are (a) in record of marriage of Aeltje, where she appears as "Aeltje Theunis Van Couverden" (N.Y. Du. Ch. Rec. - NYG&B Soc. Co.., 1890, p. 45); and (b) in Snell's Hist of Hunterdon and Somerset Cos., N.J. p. 561, and Messler's Hist. of Somerset Co., p. 34 where the authors say that among the heads of families who came from Long Island to N.J. was "Jan Hans Coeverden." The next nearest form is in the deed from "Abraham Coverd" to his brother "Isaac Coverd." Note that wives of Dutchmen were usually spoken of and recorded by their maiden names."
  • "Bergen's "Early Settlers of Kings Co., N.Y." treats the Covert family the most extensively of any work seen. Of Theunis and his family, he says: Teunis Janse (Covert) emigrated 1651 from Heemstede; m. Barbara Lucas or Janse; Hans Teunise (Covert) m. Jannetje Boka (Bragow).
  • In records of Ref. Du. Ch. of NY before 1660; and Holland Society Year Book 1879 p. 133: wife as Barbara Jans appears only once; wife as Barbara Lucas found several times on the church record; no marriage record found; uncertain that the two women were identical.
  • son Hans/Jan Teunis (Covert) m. Jannetje, dau. of Bragoon Braghar or (Bourgen/Broecord/Broeckaert).
  • Bragon b. 1696 (son of Hans Coevers & Jannetje Coevers) (Hol. Soc. Year-Book 1897)

Source notes

  • Dutch Kills, Brooklyn, Long Island: Per Wikipedia,
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Kills,_Queens
Dutch Kills was a hamlet on a navigable tributary of Newtown Creek. It remained a community of farms during the 19th century, and in 1870 consolidated with Hunters Point, Ravenswood, Astoria & Steinway to form Long Island City, Queens NY. Dutch Kills "occupied what today is centrally Queensboro Plaza."
Newtown Creek forms part of the boundary between present-day Queens Co. (Queens) & Kings. Co. (Brooklyn). It runs parallel to and just soutn of I-495 which crosses the East River into Manhattan at the Queens Midtown Tunnel. The southernmost tributary runs northward from an area of Kings Co. (Brooklyn) just SE of I-278,the Brooklyn Queens Expy,, into Newtown Creek in Queens.
  • Identity of baptism witnesses (for Bragon Covert) Ysaac Brokaer & Marritje Coevers are unknown. Ysaac Brokaer could be a grandparent; or they could be an aunt & uncle.
