NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Gracie Leola King is not in my direct ancestry. She is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Grace King was the older sister of our direct line ancestor Mack Herron King. She married John W. Hipp and lived on the old Hipp farm in Steele Creek Twp., Mecklenburg Co., NC, three hundred feet from the SC state line. Grace and John Hipp had two children before John died. Mack Herron King as a teenager went to live with his widowed sister and help run the farm. Her young son Willie Hipp formed a life-long attachment to Mack, and followed him around as he did the chores, even as he plowed with the mule. When Mack Herron King married Nancy Grace Thomas, one of the daughters from the neighboring Thomas farm, the young couple lived on the Hipp farm and Mack King continued to work the farm. When Nancy Grace Thomas' brother Moody Thomas married and had no place to live, a tenement house on the Hipp farm was offered to them. Eventually, Grace King Hipp and her two children formed a mixed family with William H. Windle and his two children from a previous marriage. Grace moved to the Windle house on Steel Creek Road near the NC line in Fort Mill, SC, but her brother Mack King & family continued to live on the Hipp farm for a time. Mack was hired for the rebuilding of the flood-ruined Catawba River Dam, and eventually moved his family into housing provided by the power company. It isn't known how long Moody Thomas' family continued on the Hipp farm. He moved to Ft. Mill, SC and worked for Spring Mills, manufacturer of SpringMaid cotton textiles. This mill was begun by Colonel Springs whose home still stands in Ft. Mill.
