Frances Mains was born in Pennsylvania. Her husband, John Gallagher, Jr., was born in Ireland, County Donegal, in about 1783. He came with his parents John and Margaret Gallagher to Butler County, Pennsylvania around the turn of the century and lived with them in Muddy Creek township for some years. Frances and John Jr. subsequently settled on a farm near that of his brother James C. Gallagher in Franklin Township.

2	1895 History of Butler Co., PA, Brown & Co., p. 1262 John Gallagher biographical sketch: "John Gallagher, Sr., one of the pioneers of Butler county, was a native of Down county, Ireland, and settled in Muddy Creek township, late in the Eighteenth or early in the present century. .."
