Frances Mains is not in my direct ancestor. She is related by marriage in the following ways:


Frances Mains was born in Pennsylvania. Her husband, John Gallagher, Jr., was born in Ireland, County Donegal, in about 1783. He came with his parents John and Margaret Gallagher to Butler County, Pennsylvania around the turn of the century and lived with them in Muddy Creek township for some years. Frances and John Jr. subsequently settled on a farm near that of his brother James C. Gallagher in Franklin Township.

They are listed as living with three daughters: Margaret Gallagher, 28; Mary Gallagher, 26; and Catherine Gallagher, 24. John is listed as a farmer , real estate valued at $1,000, and as having been born in Ireland. The remainder of the family is listed as born in PA. John is listed as unable to read or write.

2 1895 History of Butler Co., PA, Brown & Co., p. 1262 John Gallagher biographical sketch:
"John Gallagher, Sr., one of the pioneers of Butler county, was a native of Down county, Ireland, and settled in Muddy Creek township, late in the Eighteenth or early in the present century. .." The biography says that with him came his wife and six children; John Jr. is listed as the second son.
