3 Reproduction Map of Butler County Pennsylvania 1858, Violet M. Covert 2005, p.25 Centre Twp. Map shows the farms of various owners in 1858. In northwestern Centre Twp., along Swamp Run, are various McCandless farms including those listed as belonging to R. McCandless, Geo. McCandless, J. McCandless, McCandless, (and a variety of other McCandlesses. These likely indicate the farms of the three brothers Robert, George, and James McCandless (or James' son Joshua).

Source notes

  • Joseph A. Ferree, Jr.'s book, The McCandless and Related Families, implies that the father of the three immigrant (~1819) brothers, (Robert, James and George C. McCandless)did not himself leave Ireland. The three brothers settled along Swamp Run among earlier McCandless immigrants in Butler County, PA. The above references concern the three brothers rather than the father.
  • The maiden names of the spouses of the three brothers were indeed McCandless. They were daughters of granddaughters of the first group of three McCandless brothers to immigrate. Much of Centre Twp., Butler Co. PA was populated by McCandless families.
