1 1800 United States Federal Census, Middleton Twp, Cumberland Co, PA, page 5. Family headed by James Irvine: 2 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 male >44, 2 females 16-25, 1 female 26-44.
Of several James Irvine households in Cumberland County in 1800, this is the only one where the ages appear to fit for James Irvin who had a daughter born in the 1760's, This household would consist of a widowed James Irvin and one or more of his children and their families.

Source notes

  • The writer of the biographical sketch (in History of Venango County PA) names the father of Thomas Hoge as John rather than James, and the paternal grandmother as Mary rather than Letitia. Given this degree of inaccuracy, our confidence in the maternal grandparents names is diminished. This however is at present the only source we have naming Mary Irwin's parents. It appears that both the Hogues and Irwins were from Tuscarora Valley in present-day Juniata County.

Conjecture

  • 1895 History of Butler Co. PA, p. 51, Taxables of 1803, Connoquenessing Twp., lists a James Irvine with 100 acres, 1 cow,1 horse or oxen, valuation $80, tax $0.24. This could be a brother of Mary Irwin, or could be unrelated.
