1 1840 United States Federal Census, Muddy Creek Twp, Butler Co, PA, page 23. Census is not dated.
Family headed by Barnard Stoeton(sic): 2 males <5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30.
The male and female in their 20's are the proper ages for Barnard Stoughton and his wife Susan. The two youngest males are likely to be their children, but the 10-15 year old seems too old to be a child of someone in their 20's.
Family headed by Margaret Stoeton is two entries earlier; William Wimer is next entry.

The ages of the children align well with other census data, as does the age for Barnard Stoughton.

This family is a good match for that of Barnard V. Stoughton in names and ages. The discrepancy in the name of Barnard is possibly an notation error by the census taker.

Elliot Harvey Stoughton born 1845 in Butler Co. PA, died 1897 in Washington. Ref. No. 11044 Married on 4 July 1870 in Corsica, Clarion Co. PA, to Melissa Jane Spence (b. 1850, Jefferson Co. PA).Children:

  • Luella Stoughton b. 27 Jan 1872 in Clarion Co. PA
  • William Osborn Stoughton b. 1874 in Barnett Twp., Jefferson Co. PA
  • Sarah Blanche Stoughton b. 15 Dec in Scotch Hill, Clarion Co. PA

Source notes

  • Source 8, Rootsweb file, lists son William Osborn Stoughton as born in Barnett Twp., Jefferson Co. PA; however the 1880 census shows the family living in Barnett Twp., Forest Co. PA with William at age 6. These two Barnett townships are across the Clarion River from each other, and the change in county lines may account for the duplication; the family may not have moved.
  • As E. H. Stoughton is not mentioned in the obituary of Susan Myer, we think he was a son of Barnard V. Stoughton's 1st marriage, wife unknown.
