Govert Jans
Resident of Holland
The parents of Govert Jans are not known, but by customary Dutch naming practice we expect his father's given name to be Jan, surname unknown. Likewise his wife's father is expected to be Michiel unknown. Govert Jans and wife Pieterje Michiels lived in Amsterdam at the height of the era of Dutch shipping, trading and exploration; also the height of the Northern Renaissance. We don't know the occupation of Govert Jans; he may have been a farmer or he may have practiced one of the emerging trades. Among his descendants are found shoemakers, printers and bookbinders.
16th Century History of the Netherlands
In 1500 the Seventeen Provinces of the Low Countries belonged politically to Burgundian Dukes who formed personal alliances. The Flemish cities were the important centers, culturally and economically. The Netherlands in this era were one of the richest parts of Europe, their wealth based largely on the shipping industry. From their mastery of the seas came the Dutch colonial empire, the rise of the wealthy middle classes, and the diversity of tradesmen. During the course of the 16th century the region also experienced significant political changes. The union of the lowlands with Spain under Charles V,combined with the Renaissance's renewed awareness of Humanism and the religious Reformation led to a rebellion against the Spanish rule and to the start of the religious war. By 1600, the northern and southern Netherlands were effectively split. In Northern Renaissance art, the Dutch Golden Age blossomed in the north while the Flemish Baroque, reflecting the Catholic Counter-Reformation, developed in the south. Gradually, as the Southern Netherlands remained under Spanish rule, the balance of power shifted to the north and the emerging Dutch Republic.
