1 | 1840 United States Federal Census, Muddy Creek Twp, Butler Co, PA, page 23. Census is not dated. Family headed by Barnard Stoeton(sic): 2 males <5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30. The male and female in their 20's are the proper ages for Barnard Stoughton and his wife Susan. The two youngest males are likely to be their children, but the 10-15 year old seems too old to be a child of someone in their 20's. Family headed by Margaret Stoeton is two entries earlier; William Wimer is next entry. |

2 | 1850 United States Federal Census, Piney Twp, Clarion Co, PA, page 24. Previous page dated 30 Sept. 1850. Lines 16-25: B.W. Stoughton, 33, shoemake; Susannah, 33; John, 14; Joseph, 12; Elliott, 10; Hannah, 8; Catharine, 6; Susannah, 4; Jane, 2; Elizabeth, 1/2. John, Joseph, Elliott and Hannah attended school. The ages of the children align well with other census data, as does the age for Barnard Stoughton. |

3 | 1860 United States Federal Census, Tionesta Twp, Venango Co, PA, page 13. Census dated 15 Aug 1860. Lines 6-14:D.V. Stoten, 42, farmer, $500 real, $150 personal property; Susan, 46; Joseph, 21, farmer; E.H., 18, farmer; Hannah, 18, house keeping; Catherine, 16, house keeping; June, 12; Elizabeth, 10; Ida, 7. All b. PA. This family is a good match for that of Barnard V. Stoughton in names and ages. The discrepancy in the name of Barnard is possibly an notation error by the census taker. |

Source notes
- Source 8, Rootsweb file, lists son William Osborn Stoughton as born in Barnett Twp., Jefferson Co. PA; however the 1880 census shows the family living in Barnett Twp., Forest Co. PA with William at age 6. We suspect a miss-transcription of the county name in the Rootsweb file.
- As E. H. Stoughton is not mentioned in the obituary of Susan Myer, we think he was a son of Barnard V. Stoughton's 1st marriage, wife unknown.
