Mary Catherine Stoughton

NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR Mary Catherine "Kate" Stoughton is not in my direct ancestry. She is two steps removed in the following ways: Niece of Andrew Stoughton; daughter of Barnard V. Stoughton Granddaughter of John Stoughton and Catherine Covert

Mary Catherine Stoughton was probably born in Muddy Creek Twp., Butler County, PA. She was a toddler, probably two or three years old when her mother, Susan Harvey, died. Her father moved by 1848 to Callensberg in Clarion Co. and remarried when Mary Catherine was four; her step-mother Susan Myer raised her. Mary Catherine married at age 20 to William Whitman, who was 11 years her senior. They moved westward to Lawrence Co., Missouri by 1860, and her father followed in 1867. The two families were still in Missouri in 1870. Her father moved on to Kansas in 1880 but the Whitmans appear to have remained in Missouri, in Newton County in 1900 & 1910. By 1900 they had had seven children, six of whom were living, and by 1910 only five children remained living. Mary Catherine was age 65 in 1910, her husband age 81. Two daughters live with them, the younger, Mollie, age 13, which would indicate that Mary Catherine had her last child at about age 52.

The two youngest males are likely to be their children, but the 10-15 year old seems too old to be a child of someone in their 20's. Family headed by Margaret Stoeton is two entries earlier; William Wimer is next entry.

• If William Whitman's parents (born in Germany per 1900 census) were Germans, then a surname change is to be expected.
• No Whitmans of age to be children found in 1910 census, Newton Co., Missouri. Numerous Whitmans in Missouri, but no basis to connect them as children of Mary Catherine, if not living in proximity.
