1 | History of Venango County PA, Brown Runk & Co, 1890, Vol 2, pg. 831. "Thomas Hoge, deceased, was born in Butler County, PA, March 7, 1808, son of John (sic) and Mary (Irwin) Hoge. His grandparents, Robert and Mary (sic) Hoge, were natives of Ireland, as were also his maternal grandparents, James and Martha Irwin, who emigrated in 1760 and settled in the Tuscarora valley, Juniata County. His parents were married in 1789 and reared a family of five sons, Thomas being the youngest..." |
Source notes
- The writer of the biographical sketch (in History of Venango County PA) names the father of Thomas Hoge as John rather than James, and the paternal grandmother as Mary rather than Letitia. The name James Hoge is confirmed in census sources. (The name Letitia is from another secondary source, so the correct name could be Mary or Letitia.) Given this degree of inaccuracy, our confidence in the maternal grandparents names is not complete. This is at present the only source we have naming Mary Irwin's parents. It appears that both the Hogues and Irwins were from Tuscarora Valley in present-day Juniata County.
