The family of Ben Scarbrough includes: 1 male <10, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 13 females <10, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 26-44. The male <10 fits for Samuel Scarboro born 1809; the rest of the ages make sense with the 1830 census. There are families of John and Wm. Scarbrough nearby.
2	1830 United States Federal Census, East of Pee Dee and Yadkin River, Montgomery Co, NC page 1. FAmily of Benjamin Scarbrough Sen: 1 male <5, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 50-60, 2 females 20-30, 1 female 50-60. This appears to be too old for Benjamin Scarbrough, father of John Scarboro, but the 15-20 year old male could be him if the age is a little off.
3	1850 United States Federal Census, No twp.given, Montgomery Co. NC. (from Ancestry.com pg.7). Date of census 26 July 1850. Benjamin Scarbrough, age 41, farmer; Frances (female) age 31; John, age 16; B. F., age 14, Wm. age 11; Martha E. age 10; Robert H. age 5; James E. age 1; Rachael Morton age 32. Another Morton is found nearby in the household of John B. Ballard age 49, & family: Rhoda Morton, age 23, listed as "pauper, fits" Note: at this time, this census is the only source suggesting a connection to Benjamin Scarbrough. This is also the only evidence we have of a possible parentage of John Scarboro. John's age is in the correct range in the Benjamin Scarbrough family, and the location is good.
4	1860 United States Federal Census, Zion Twp, Montgomery Co, NC, page 15 and 16. Census dated 18 Aug 1960. Lines 30-40 and 1-2 list: D.D. Berry age 31 county surveyor, $2000 real, $4300 personal property; Benjamin Scarboro, age 51, farmer, $140 pers. prop., can not read or write; Franky, F, age 42; William, age 21, carpenter(?); Martha, 20, Robert H., 17; Benj. F, 15; James, 12; Samuel, 10; Peter, 7; Ann, 5; Fannie, 2; Sallie Berry, 11. All born NC. Benjamin seems to have aged less than the other children between 1850 and 1860. The relationship of DD Berry is unclear.

6	OneWorldTree, from Ancestry.com - Doing a search on Mary Ann Scarbrough returned a family tree that shows John Scarboro as her father, Benjamin Scarborough as her grandfather, and has birth and death dates for Benjamin Scarborough. Source notes

• There are no additional records at this point (28 Aug 2007) to corroborate the census records for the Scarborough line earlier than Mary Ann Scarborough. However, the census records seem to delineate the family of Benjamin Scarborough adequately, and the location is consistent with later Scarborough records.
  
• No record of Benjamin Scarboro could be found in the 1820, 1840 or 1870 census for Montgomery Co.
  In the 1840 Montgomery Co census at least one page is missing.
  The 1820 census for the entire county is not on Ancestry.com.
  
• The record on the Ancestry.com OneWorldTree lists Frances's maiden name as Spivey, but no primary source is listed, and we have no corroboration.
