Timothy Stoughton was "a sadler by trade and at times he paid his rates by mending a saddle according to entries in the Rate Book kept by his uncle, Rev. Timothy Edwards for whom he had been named". He was born in Windsor, Connecticut, and thirty years later married in Hartford, Connecticut to Hannah Olcott, daughter of thomas and Sarah (Foote) Olcott. When Hannah died seven years later, Timothy "appears to have remained (in Hartford) for the following six or seven years. By 1751 he was in Somerset County, Province of New Jersey, the county in which his son William eventually married Catherine Covert.
