Timothy Stoughton was "a sadler by trade and at times he paid his rates by mending a saddle according to entries in the Rate Book kept by his uncle, Rev. Timothy Edwards for whom he had been named". He was born in Windsor, Connecticut, and thirty years later married in Hartford, Connecticut to Hannah Olcott, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Foote) Olcott. When Hannah died seven years later, Timothy "appears to have remained (in Hartford) for the following six or seven years. By 1751 he was in Somerset County, Province of New Jersey, the county in which his son William eventually married Catherine Covert. Subsequently he seems to have been out of touch with his relatives in Windsor for an number of years. When His brother Isaac's estate was settled in 1755, a share was left for "Mr. Timothy, if he was living att ye time of ye Deceased Death."..."He was of Provincetown, Frederick County, Maryland in 1763 when he sold his interest in his father's home lot to Oliver Stoughton, son of his cousin Nathaniel." He was not living 26 March 1780, per a letter from Jonathan to Samuel Stoughton, see below. It is addressed to Greenfield, presumably in Maryland, possibly present day Greenfield Mills area, near Baltimore. In fact, all three brothers born to Hannah Olcott may have been more or less out of touch with one another. In the letter below dated 27 Aug, 1809, Augustus, son of John Stoughton, wrote to his uncle Samuel saying he had just received news of the death of his father, news out of date bu 20 years, likely because Augustus himself had removed to the "Province of Canada".
It is not surprising that the family was not close. Timothy, the father, gave up Samuel to an apprenticeship as an infant, and some years after wife Hannah died, moved to New Jersey, then to Maryland. The full letters reflect a deep religeous faith, but awkward relationships.
"Timothy Stoughton is supposed to have married a second time, but details of his History after his departure from Hartford are unknown".
