The Snyder name is expected to be of German heritage, and to appear as Schneider in early US and German records.  Our initial knowledge of Barbara A. comes from her gravestone and the records of the Salem Lutheran cemetery association, Clarion County, PA.  From her age at death, her birth date is calculated to be about 28 February 1791.  He died in 1844.  His wife Barbara survived him until 1851, residing next door to their son Christopher Snyder in Richland township, Clarion County.

  • "Barbara, Wife of Harmon Snyder, Died (Nov) 10, 18(51)". This stone is broken, barely legible, beside (to north of) the Harman Snyder stone. In 1995 the top portion of the stone was propped against its base; only "Barbara" was legible. By 2006, it lay flat in ground; cream used to enhance legibility.

Snyder, D.A., Lamartine P.O., Salem, was born where he now resides on February 9, 1850; is a farmer and owns 100 acres. His parents were Marmon(sic) and Mary E. (Knight) Snyder. Mr. Snyder came from Clinton county about 1841, and died in 1871. Mrs. Snyder was born in this county. Clara Laughner was a daughter of Barney and Catharine (McCalmont) Laughner. D. A. and Clara have had a family of five children - Edna M., Laura K., Inez M., Arthur B., and Perm E.

  • Source 1: The 1820 census does not include son Harmon S. Snyder, possibly born 1820. If so, he would have been born after the date of the 1820 census, unrecorded on this page.
  • Source 9: Barbara Ann Hartman died in 1851. One transcription of her gravestone, found in this records of the Salem Lutheran Cemetery Association, records her dates as 1851–1855, possibly a typo, but more likely an unwitting use of a visible number "55", which is more likely to have been her age. This record lists not only burials, but had added family names as a sort of community genealogy. It also records her husband Harmon Snyder's dates to be "1844 – 1853". His stone was photographed and transcribed in 1995 by E W W with death year of 1844, age 53 years.; see the link to Salem Lutheran Cemetery Association notes. The value of this record is knowing their graves were likely here; old, worn, and Barbara's lying flat & half buried by grass, might have been overlooked.
  • Residence Chart: It is possible the Snyder family did not move between their 1830 and 1840 census entries. Clinton County, PA was formed in 1839 from land that was formerly part of Centre County. Possibly their home in Lamar Township, Centre County (1830) and in Lamar Township, Clinton County (1840) are the same site.

  • 1920 census: look at preceding census pages to find date of census, to refine possible birth date for son Harmon S.
  • The Snyders were Lutherans in Clarion County, PA. A search of Lutheran and/or Reformed church records in Centre County for the marriage of Harmon and Barbara, and for the births/baptismal records of their children, is indicated.
