7 | 1910 United States Federal Census, District 118, Steel Creek Twp, Mecklenburg Co. NC, page 35. Census dated 3 May 1910. Lines 45-50: John E. Brandon, head, age 30, married 6 years, farm laborer, owns house & farm, b. SC, father b. SC, mother b. NC; Bell, 24, wife, married 6 years, 2 children born, both living; Connie N., dau, 4, b. NC; Myrtle E., dau., 1 month, b. NC; Dory Plummer, uncle, age 40, single, farm labor, b. NC as were parents, can read, write and speak English; Josephine Torrence, dau., age 4, b. NC, father b. NC, mother b. SC. The family lives on Wright's Ferry Road. Notes: The notation seems to indicate that Josephine Torrence is Dory's daughter; possibly Torrence was her mother's last name (?).Dory is listed as single rather than widowed or divorced; apparently a single parent. The residence number differs from that of the Brandon family, but has been X-ed out, so possibly Dory & Josephine had an apartment with the Brandons. Dory's relationship to head of household is marked as uncle; John E. Brandon, or possibly his wife Bell, was then a child of one of Dory's siblings. Dory's age in 1910 agrees with the 1900 census for Dare Plummer; it varies by 6-8 years from the 1980 and 1970 census for Theodore. |

9 | Charlotte Police Department 1866-1991 "In 1827 Charlotte got it's first constable, a position which required great versatility since the job description required the constable to supervise the town guards, oversee the jail, collect taxes, and supervise street maintenance. During the 1850's the town guard increased to 10 people who were paid $15 per month for their services. Two of the earliest guards were George Plummer and James Gray. Their duties required them to patrol the streets from 9 p.m. until daylight and every hour cry out "all is well" and give the current time in a loud voice. Failure to perform this duty or to clean and wash the street lamps on their beat once a month during the dark of the moon resulted in a fine of $1.00. By 1861 Charlotte's population had increased to 1500 people so it was necessary to add more guards and increase their hours from sunup to sundown. However, the guards received a salary increase to the princely sum of $30 per month." This source contributed by E. Hyland. | |

Source notes
- The names Dory, Dare, Theodore, and possibly T. Newton Plummer appear to apply to one person. The father George Plummer was illiterate, so the age given at census varies by about 8 years, the birth date thus calculated as being between 1862 and 1870.
- The obituary is missing a comma between the names of sons Charles and Monroe. It explicitly states that there are five living sons and then only lists four, one of which is given as "Charles Monroe" Plummer.
- The obituary lists the age at death as 82 (twice), and infers a date of death as Feb 20, 1907. This suggests a birthday somewhere in the 1824-1825 range. This is 4-5 years off of the consistent results from the census data, which place his birthday around 1820. However, the children's names match too closely for this to be the wrong George.
