16th Century History of the Netherlands
During the course of the 16th century the Netherlands experienced significant political changes. The union of the lowlands with Spain under Charles V, combined with the Renaissance's renewed awareness of Humanism, and the religious Reformation led to a rebellion against the Spanish rule and to the start of the religious war. By 1600, the northern and southern Netherlands were effectively split. In Northern Renaissance art, the Dutch Golden Age blossomed in the north while the Flemish Baroque, reflecting the Catholic Counter-Reformation, developed in the south. He would have been of the generation of Maria Goverts' children.) Gradually, as the Southern Netherlands remained under Spanish rule, the balance of power shifted to the north and the emerging Dutch Republic. Amsterdam became the center of wealth, power, and exploration. Governors in Amsterdam controlled the Dutch colony in America. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaissance_in_the_Netherlands
