He is presumed to have been the oldest son, as his family sent him alone at age 13 or 14 to America, to spare him being drafted into WWII and to preserve the family name. He arrived in Philadelphia in 1914. He may have known other Greeks in western Pennsylvania. He found work in steel mills around Tarantum/Pittsburgh, and Butler PA. He and [[Ruth M. Wilson]] went to West Virginia to marry. They had four children, all born in Oil City, PA. At some point he shortened his name to George Vergis. This may have been a gradual process, as some insurance bills list his wife Ruth as "Ruth Vergitakis". They moved to Franklin, PA in 1944, and opened a shoe shine and hat-cleaning shop and pool room. Eventually they owned a restaurant with rear pool room.
