+ | Susan/Susannah Blanche Stoughton was born about 1846, the last child of her mother Susan Harvey, and was probably born in Muddy Creek Twp., Butler Co. PA. It isn't known exactly when her mother died, possibly at Susannah's birth. By 1848 her father had moved to Clarion Co. PA and remarried to Susan Myer. Susan was raised by her mother's sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Durstin/Dustin. In 1850, a 3 yr. old Susannah Stoughton is recorded in Aug., in the Martin Durstine home in Muddy Creek, Butler Co. PA; a 4 yr.old Susannah is recorded in Sept., in the Barnard V. Stoughton home in Piney Twp., Clarion Co. PA. (If these ages are accurate, possibly she had been taken to her father's for her birthday, sometime between 29 Aug. & 30 Sept.) Apparently she was spending time in both homes. Her step-sister Jennie, in her memoir, tells us that the Dustin family moved to Illinois, and that they raised Susannah. Martin Dustin and wife Mary Ann are in Mount Pleasant Twp, Whiteside Co, IL, in 1860 with several of their children. Son Christian Dustin is residing with the family of George & Marrium Beureville, as is Susanna Straughton (sic), age 13, born in PA. <br> Blanche returned to Clarion Co. PA and in 1867 married Robert M. McCormick. They had eight children, five sons and three daughters. Two of the sons died young, one in childhood and one as a seventeen-year-old in a work related accident. Blanche died in 1912 at age sixty-five, and is buried with her husband in Linesville Cemetery, Crawford Co. PA.

− | + | * The birthplace of Susan Blanche Stoughton, Callensburg, Clarion Co. PA, is miss-identified in the "Memories" writings of her half-sister [[Jennie S. Stoughton]] as Kalensburg, Armstrong Co. PA.
− | + | * 1900 Census Beaver Co. PA, Harmony Twp. Blanche McCormick reports that her parents were born in England. They were in fact born in Pennsylvania, but the Stoughton family origins were in England. One can imagine her as a child, living with an aunt, being told that the family came from England and her taking that to mean her immediate family.
− | =Source | + | * 1900 Census Beaver Co. PA, Harmony Twp. Blanche McCormick reports giving birth to 8 children, only 6 living in 1900. Guy Winfield McCormick died in 1885. A son, D. McCormick, age 2 in 1880, does not appear in the 1900 census, nor does Sinclair McCormick, b. 1871. However, son Sinclair (as St. Clair) is mentioned as a survivor in his mother's obituary. Therefore, the two children born to the McCormicks but died before 1900 are sons Guy Winfield McCormick and D. McCormick. |

Susan/Susannah Blanche Stoughton was born about 1846, the last child of her mother Susan Harvey, and was probably born in Muddy Creek Twp., Butler Co.
Blanche returned to Clarion Co. PA.

9 | Memories by Jennie Stoughton Osborn, Copyright 1935, Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Pg. 3 Father had married Susan Harvey, but she died leaving six children: John , Joseph, Elliott, Hannah, Catharine, and Susan Blanche, the baby whom the mother gave to her sister, a Mrs. Dustin , who took her to Illinois... Pg.95 Jennie Stoughton Osborn says that her family came West in 1866. Pg. 15 "father Barnard and Blanche would go on the train to Illinois to see the aunt who raised her. Blanche was engaged to be married the next Spring and did not want to go with us to Missouri." (Ed. This allows the marriage of Susan Blanche Stoughton to Robert Martin McCormick to be dated to the Spring of 1867, based on what Jennie says in her book.) |

12 | Research of A. Fix,gr-gr-gr-niece of Susan Blanche Stoughton, correspondence 2010-ongoing. Susan Blanche Stoughton, b. 1847, was raised by her aunt Mary Ann Harvey Durstin, when Blanch's mother, Susan Harvey Stoughton, died. Mary Ann Dustin Harvey and Susan Harvey Stoughton were sisters. They lived in Illinois for a time. Susan Blanche later went back to Pennsylvania and there married Robert Martin McCormick. Both are buried in the Linesville Cemetery, Crawford Co. Pa. Susan Blanche Stoughton McCormick was the daughter of Bernard VanZant Stoughton (1817-1887) and Susan Harvey Stougthon (1817-1847). A.Fix has corresponded with McCormick descendants, who knew only that Susan Blanche was buried at Linesville Cemetery (Crawford Co. PA) with her husband Robert Martin McCormick. Susan Blanche Stoughton, aka Blance S., is referred to as "Blanche" in the memoir, "Memories", by Jennie S. Stoughton Osborn. |

[edit] Source Notes
- The birthplace of Susan Blanche Stoughton, Callensburg, Clarion Co. PA, is miss-identified in the "Memories" writings of her half-sister Jennie S. Stoughton as Kalensburg, Armstrong Co. PA.
- 1900 Census Beaver Co. PA, Harmony Twp. Blanche McCormick reports that her parents were born in England. They were in fact born in Pennsylvania, but the Stoughton family origins were in England. One can imagine her as a child, living with an aunt, being told that the family came from England and her taking that to mean her immediate family.
- 1900 Census Beaver Co. PA, Harmony Twp. McCormick.
