NOT A DIRECT ANCESTOR

Harmon S. Snyder is not in my direct ancestry. He is 1 step removed in the following ways:

Harmon S. Snyder " came from Clinton county about 1841" to Clarion Co., PA, apparently to Salem Twp. where his son D.A. Snyder was born. He apparently married after arriving in Clarion Co., as Mary E. Knight, his wife, was born in Clarion Co. Harmon died in 1871. (from 1887 Hist. Clarion Co. by Davis, p. lii biography of D.A. Snyder).

1 1820 United States Federal Census , Lamar Twp, Centre Co, PA, pg 3. Census not dated. Lists family of Harmon Snyder: 1 male 0-5, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 16-26. A John Snyder family is next door.

2 1830 United States Federal Census, Lamar Twp, Centre Co, PA, pg 9. Census is not dated. Family of Herman Snyder: 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 2 females 2-5, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 30-40. This corresponds to either Harmon S. Snyder (~10) or Christopher Snyder (~11) [the other seems to be missing], Harmon Snyder (~39), Sarah Snyder (~1), Rachel Snyder (~3), Barbara Snyder (~6), Matilda Snyder (~8), and Barbara A. (Unknown) (~34). The age match for Sarah is off by one year and one of the boys isn't listed. A Benjamin Snyder and wife, both 20-30 yrs are two residences away.

3 1840 United States Federal Census, Lamar Twp, Clinton Co, PA, pg 15. Census is not dated. Family headed by Harman Snyder: 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 40-50, 1 male 70-80, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 40-50. These correspond to Harmon S. Snyder (~20), Christopher Snyder (~21), Harmon Snyder (~49), an unknown elderly man who could be the father of Harmon or Barbara, Caroline Snyder (~9), Sarah Snyder (~11), two girls who do not quite match our best age data for a chronologically contiguous pair of Rachel, Barbara , or Matilda , and Barbara A. (Unknown) (~44). There is one missing female child, so presumably one of the older girls has already been married and left home. The most likely candidate would be Matilda, who is 18, though she appears in her mother's home in 1850. Barbara, ~16, is perhaps too young to have married.
