From p. 69: "James McCandless, the second of the second group of three brothers, was born in County Down, Ireland. He settled on a tract of land in Butler Co. later known as that of his son, Joshua. He married Jane (Jennie) McCandless, daughter of Moses McCandless (page 55). Jane died June 21, 1881. Both James and Jane are probably buried in the private cemetery lot on the George C. McCandless farm. George C. is the third of the three brothers. The children of James and Jennie (McCandless) McCandless are: -
John A. McCandless married Hanna Stoughton. See page 70.
Joshua McCandless married married Lucinda McCandless. See page below.
Julia Ann McCandless married Albert Ralston. Their daughter, Laura B. Ralston married in 1893 John A. Saxman. See Beer's Armstrong County History.
Mary Jane McCandless married John C. Stoughton. See page 70."

from p.68, the Second Group of Three Brothers
"About 1819, a second group of three brothers came from Ireland to America. Their names were Robert S. McCandless, James McCandless, and George C. McCandless. It is said that they were cousins of the two McCandless families already here. In order to distinguish them from the relatives already established in Butler County, the newcomers were nicknamed the "Swamp McCandlesses". Therefore, Robert S. McCandless was called Swamp Robert, James (Jimmy) was called Swamp James, and George C. was called Swamp George. The name of their father is not known to us."
