*''Revolutionary War Veterans Who Settled in Butler Co. PA'' by Paul W. Myers, pg.16 "Wimer, Adam. born May 30, 1763 in Virginia, and died Jan. 3, 1845, in Mercer County (now Lawrence Co.), PA. He enlisted in the Bedford Co. PA Militia when he was 18 yrs. old & served under Captain Boyd & Captain Dunlap, defending the frontier agains Indians. he participated in the Battle of Frankstown, where he was wounded. About 1800, he and his family of 10 children settled in Portersville, Muddy Creek Twp., Butler Co., where he ramined for some years before removing several miles west in present day Slippery Rock Twp., Lawrence Co. Some of his children & their descendants remained inbutler Co. In 1850, sons Jacob and Henry Wimer applied for pensions based on their father's military service. the application was rejected for lack of sufficient proof of service." (Myers quotes his sources as 1) Pennsylvania Archives, and 2) Federal Pension App., Nat. Archives.)
* Considerations re. "born in Virginia": 1) Virginia, until the time of the Civil War, included present-day West Virginia, which borders on SE Pennsylvania. 2) Most of the SW corner of PA up to the Ohio River was claimed by Virginia. Many people in this area listed VA as birthplace. 3) In the mid-1700's, the governor of VA encouraged settlement of Shenandoah Valley, as a buffer zone to prevent Indian raids into the area east of the Blue Ridge. Most of these settlers came from Maryland & PA, especially from the Mennonite areas. (Personal correspondence of Norman C. Miller, Jr., 1988)
